Now i'm running an i3 and i want to make a jump but I don't really know if i should go for an i7 6700k or i5 6600k.

I'm looking for something for the long run because I'm expecting to stick with my next cpu for more than 3 years. I'm mostly gaming and I think the 6600k is enough but I don't want to buy it and then be in the minimum specs for a game in the next year or so.

Also, some info on a good cooler?

The i5 is fine. Do you have a Z170 motherboard? If not, get the locked 6500 as you cant overclock with out one. A hyper 212 is a good budget cooler.

If you want to keep if for the long run, why not the i7 6700K if you can afford it? It will help you out with tasks like editing and who knows maybe will be more relevant with DX 12 and Vulkan.

What are your specs now?

Why not the i7 6700K? It's better than the i5 6600K and you won't have to upgrade the CPU for 5+ years if current trends are anything to go by.

Well,I need to change my motherboard too,not to mention that i would like to get 16 gb ddr4 RAM. I can aford them both but it's more of waiting game if I want the i7. I think i'll have the money for the i5 by this december maybe january tops, and for the i7 i think i can make due by february.

I don't really know about that. It would be nice to be like that but with AMD's Zen rolling out next year i don't know if it will last 5 years.

My recommendation would largely dpened on the kind of games you play, and the kind of refresh rate your monitor has. if you want 144hz gaming on AAA titles, you're going to need dat 6700k. If your needs are more lax, or you don't really care about having every last fps you can possibly get, then a 6600k is still a decent choice.

I'm in a process of upgrading my rig and I'm starting with the cpu, mainly because my gpu is somehow newer and i think it can last for another 4-5 months, and then i'll get a new monitor, and yes ,it will be144hz. I'm pretty much playing new games, mafia 3,bf1,etc. And I usually crank up the settings untill the fps starts going lower than 50-60.

I think i will go with the 6700k. Btw,do you have some other cpu that would be in this price range that would give a little more performance?

6600k overclocked to 4.4 GHz would be more than enough especially with his 660 GTX.

In my own opinion. a 6600k & 1070 GTX are a good match if you overclock. 6700k & 1080 are a good match if you overclock.

With 6600k, the best cooler would be Hyper 212 EVO.

With 6700k, the best cooler would be Dark Rock 3. (for those of you why I said Dark Rock 3 and not Pro 3 is because there isn't much of a noticeable difference between them)

To be honest I was thinking on buying a rx 470 or 480. Not 1080 or 1070 because those are a little out of my price range.

well, the 6600k is a pretty strong CPU for that level of card, so it might last you a few GPU generations before needing a replacement. but the 6700k is also only 100 dollars more, which isn't a whole lot more money against the cost of an entire computer.

But based on the GPU you're pairing with it and your budget, 6700k I think would be unnecessary. 6600k is more than plenty for now. and later down the road if you feel that you do need more CPU horsepower, you could always up it to a 7700k (kaby flagship CPU) without having to change motherboard or RAM.

If you're getting the i7-6700k you pretty much have to go all out on GPU, RAM and mobo aswell. I'm going for a i7-6700k with my 1070, DDR4 2400MHz and MSI Z170A Gaming M5. No need if you're only going to slowly upgrade and don't plan on going all out.

Best regards, Mikkel
