I have a gtx 1060 6GB and while playing Battlefield 1 I get fps drops and really bad stuttering so I checked my GPU usage and it goes from 100-0% instantly. I tried lowering my graphics from ultra to low and it did not change anything. Any suggestions on how I could fix this issue?

The temperatures on the card are low and my drivers are up to date.

Is it overclocked? If yes, it could be an unstable overclock. Sometimes the overclock passes stress tests but crashes in games.

Hmm, what about drivers? Do you have the latest? I personally don't update every single time a new one comes out unless I start having problems with a game.

Yeah the drivers are up to date and the temperature is around 50-60 when playing

Are you playing on DirectX12? See if switching to DirectX11 helps.

Yeah as Gonio said, doing some searching people say it can be a CPU bottleneck. What CPU do you have? Also try "Prefer maximum performance" in the power options in the nvidia control panel.

I have an i7 3770 and I cant seem to find the power options in nvidia control panel

Have been people with a 6600k and above getting these problems, so sure it's your CPU. In single player you are fine probably.

Thought EA was working on a fix to what I heard from some one that plays it (I don't). Also last week there where drivers for the GPU that could help for BF1, but not sure if that solves this CPU problem. Anyway don't go run out and buy new CPU. Let's see if EA can pull their shit together first..

So the CPU is causing my GPU usage to change rapidly?

Jup. If a CPU somehow can't deliver all data required to the GPU the GPU will throttle up and down in usage and result in fps drops. So it comes from the GPU but the cause is in this case the CPU.

See it like this: the GPU is like GIMME THE DATA GIMME GIMME. The CPU is like yeah here, uhh, wait, ehh, o here.. GPU is like: O common, I am waiting... NEED MORE..

As for BF1 the problem could be that CPU usage is not optimal (very likely scenario with EA) or possible latency and handshaking of certain instructions needed between talking to servers ( also a possible thing). Anyway story short is that many people notice that somehow a CPU that should be sufficient is holding the system back. And since this happens only in multiplayer for many, I don't think it's the hardware fault actually.

Highly doubt it's your CPU, I have a 2700K at 4.5GHz and GTX 980 OC'd (essentially a GTX 1060). 100% GPU Usage all the time, even on stock CPU speeds + OC'd GPU. Playing at 1080p, max settings. You could also be hitting some thermal issue on your system, which most likely would be an indicator of poor performance.

You did mention you were getting 60% CPU Usage on average when playing so we can say that it's definitely not a CPU bottleneck.

Thats such a wrong statement...  IF you would run a single threaded application on a 72 core machine and that thread is 100% but total usage is like a few % it's still a CPU bottleneck.

Total CPU usage is only a first indication. In this case it could also mean that his 60% is over 5 threads that are near or are maxed out. You can check this by setting the total usage graph into logical cores. But for Bf 1 it's a current know issue, that especially multiplayer the CPU usage is sometimes crazy.

Nope that's an application "problem". The application wasn't programmed to utilized more than 1 thread, therefore the bottleneck in that situation is the program. Or perhaps the program doesn't even NEED to use more than 1 thread because it's already getting the job done.

BF1 is able to utilize all 8 threads on an i7 processor. It's a multi-thread aware game, how many threads it can really utilize? That I don't know as I don't have an X99 platform.

Dude it's still a CPU bottleneck, as is your picture of usage. If you talk about what the cause of the problem is, it overall is indeed poor optimization or wrong utilization. But the result is a CPU bottleneck.

For your hypothetical situation it isn't as I explained already, but for BF1's case it is as what you said.
