But I feel like I need to wait to get the most bang for my buck.

Going with the Enthoo Evolv ITX case, I want to do small form factor. This likely means I won't be able to entertain AM4 (the last I heard they were reluctant to say they were going to making small form factors).

Is it worth waiting for next gen?

I'd probably switch to a 6600k if I were to pounce now.

Goals:

1. reduction in power draw

2. reduction in noise output

3. reduction in size

IIRC, I am pretty sure amd has confirmed mitx am4, or there was a leak of one, but they wont be launched until after kabylake.

If you want less power a gtx 1060, and a i5 6500/ i7 6700, the k cpus use an extra 30w of power over the locked ones.

Zen and Kaby Lake are minor upgrades to their previous generations. When the new architectures come out the prices will go down slightly. I don't think you will regret grabbing a Skylake. You can't use AMD if you want lower power draw and noise.

Zen will (or is supposed to be) a really big boost compared to... em... whatever we have now. Kaby Lake, not so much.

The prices on the old chips won't change they never do, when skylake released haswell never dropped in price, and same for ivybridge.

AMD has low power options they make SoCs that use under 20W, and decent quad core athlons that use 65W, and and bristol ridge is basically a 7850k squished into a 35w tdp.

And noise has nothing to with cpu manufacturer it has to do with the cooler designs, and fans you use, if you want really silent go for all noctua fans.

You don't buy AMD for performance. I said you don't buy AMD if you want low power draw because you will have to use a noisy stock cooler or buy an expensive "silent" cooler. If you are going to spend $50 for a low profile noctua air cooler your money would be better spent getting a non-k Intel cpu that will perform better and can use the stock cooler.

Yeah if you want performance in a mitx size Intel is the only option if you want anything better then amd's fm2+ platform, but to just say that all amd cpus are noisy and power hogs is just wrong, go look up the AMD wraith cooler it is the best stock cooler, and performs on par with a 212 evo.

So kabylake is nothing more then what, a ~10% improvement in IPC over skylake? Is it worth waiting for? I would love to go AMD, but I'll be waiting until Q1 (best case scenario) for the POSSIBILITY of a small form factor?

Like I said, 6600k would be my route if I were to do it now. Not too keen on spending 300+ on a 6700k when the extra threads will go mostly unused in my scenario.

I am basically looking to do this upgrade in two parts.

First Part ($400-500):

Upgrade to Enthoo Evolv ITX case, buy DDR4, Mobo, CPU (reusing SSD/HD, PSU, fans, GPU, CPU cooler)

Second Part ($700-800):

Upgrade display and GPU (The 390 still delivers great performance at 1080p.)
