So i originally planned to buy a gtx 1060 but the gtx 1050ti came out so I am planning to buy that for just light gaming.

I can easily fit in a i7 6700k in my budget but do i need that for light gaming or should i just buy a i5 6600k or just buy i7-6700?

It will depend on various factors, but an i7 6700 and i5 6600k will yield similar framerates in many current AAA titles. a 6700k is obviously superior to both, and is the CPU you want if you're after high fps gaming in CPU intensive titles (like BF 1). If you're after 60 fps gaming, or if you don't care about being under that 144fps ceiling some of the time, then a 6600k is a pretty safe investment to make.

That being said, getting a 6700k now will mean you shouldn't have to upgrade your CPU in the next 4-5ish years, which means that you will only really need to upgrade your GPU in that time, which allows for super cheap upgrades going forward (or much more powerful computers)... might be worth the extra 100 bucks if that appeals to you.

I would personally go with an i7 6700. It will be about the same price as an i5 6600K with a Z170 mobo and a decent cooler. As you said, performance will be pretty equal. The i7 will be a bit ahead and you will have less stuttering.
