Sup folks,

I was thinking of overclocking a Core i5 6600k for my next build, however I am completely new to overclocking, and don't want to end up transforming my pc into a toaster. What OC's are you guys running on 6600k's or do you have any suggestion as to what would be a wise overclock?

Here is the necessary info:

CPU: Core i5 6600k

AIO liquidcooler: Corsair H100i V2

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI (ITX)

Main purposes are gaming and video editing. (mostly 1080p)

Also, if you happen to have any general/additional information/tips, they are very, very welcome. I have never overclocked before and want to be well-informed before I could do any damage.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

TJ

You should be able to do 4.5-4.7 at ~1.3-1.385v

That's usually a decent starting point.

Stuff:  i7 7700k @ (dat nibba succ) | ASRock Z170M OC Formula | G.Skill TridentZ 3600 c16 | EKWB 1080 @ 2100 mhz  |  Acer X34 Predator | R4 | EVGA 1000 P2 | 1080mm Radiator Custom Loop | HD800 + Audio-GD NFB-11 | 850 Evo 1TB | 840 Pro 256GB | 3TB WD Blue | 2TB Barracuda

Gigabyte has a nifty piece of software for those who get annoyed by going into the bios check it out. ( I did not like it that much.... is just used the bios... but I could see how it could be useful.) Its called easytune

Also it says to download the app center first

In some cases you can use this. Sometimes it will mess up your rig.

If you didn't build this ye, get a 6700 (+ non OC setup) rather than a 6600k. It'll offer more performance without the need to OC, and probably for cheaper too.

If you've built it already, however, start by finding your max possible voltage based on temps. Given your cooler, I'd expect around the 1.35v~1.38v mark (if you go too much above that, you are doing it wrong). Once you do, find your max multiplier and then bump the Bclk to squeeze the most out of your rig.

With some of those programs it will see the max capacity the processor can overclock. If the auto overclock doesn't work it will just cause system instability

Where I live the 6700 non-k is €100 more expensive than the 6600k, so that's a no-go for my budget unfortunately.

In a vaccum, that holds true.

However, you money save by going with an H110 mobo + stock heatsink VS spending more on a Z170 + aftermarket cooler / watercooler for OCing the 6600k; if you consider the whole combo, the overall price becomes the same for both setups.

Won't this affect futureproofness?

No, not at all.

Alright, thanks, I'll take that into concideration as my next build. I also found a retailer that sells the 6700k for $350, so with a bit of saving up I might even be able to go for that!

(Isn't that the trick to building pc's? "If I go a little bit more expensive I could go for that - oh wait if I just spend a little more I can get it even better", haha. My original plan was a 6400, now I'm already 500 bucks over my initial budget that I had set #gobigorgohome am I right?)

If you are willing to go even higher, I'd suggest jumping from an H110 mobo to a Z170 one, rather than from a 6700 to a 6700k. It'll allow RAM OCing (which is probably more of a boost than the clock bump) and you won't need to invest into a 3rd party cooler (which will probably make this a cheaper upgrade).

There is none. You increase the clock speed by intervals and test stability at each stability. Once it's not stable you pull back until it is, or increase the voltage if temps stay low

Correction, for modern CPUs you generally increase the clock speed multiplier. No need to mess with the FSB (or whatever it is for modern CPUS) unless you really want to extract max performance. (Or you have a non-k version of the CPU.)

Sorry bout that, but ends up doing the same thing -- increasing the multiplier also increases the total clock speed. Not implying base clock or anything like that, thanks for clarifying that for me.

Yep! It does do the same thing. I had no doubt you knew what you were talking about, just wanted to make sure the OP got the right information, especially since changing your base clock can cause a lot of instability if not managed correctly.

The Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI is a Z170 chipset board.
