Yes it is still a good processor and I recommend any 297 motherboard from Gigabyte, Asus , or ASrock.

It's a fantastic processor. Any LGA1150 motherboard should be fine.

I'm still using an i7-4770 and as Festive recommended, any Z97 chipset motherboard (which is I'm sure what he meant) from one of the major manufacturers will work.

However, unless you're getting the processor for an absolute steal, since you're looking to buy a motherboard too, I'd recommend looking at a newer LGA 1151 setup.  This will take 6th Gen CPUs, where the motherboard for a 4th Gen CPU, (like the 4770), can at best be upgraded to a 5th Gen CPU.

I assume you meant to say z97 but I see no reason to as the 4770 isn't overclockable, H97 or H87 is fine

I am getting it for free from a computer at my dad's office, I just want something other than the dell motherboard in the pc as I will be putting in my current GPU and wifi card.

So what features do you want, as that will determine the right board for you more than anything else besides quality, also do you want ATX mATX or mini ITX (the mATX boards tend to be a bit cheaper but have less ports and such due to being smaller)

Oh and assuming your ok with matx and don't care about color this is my recommendation

It's cheap reliable and has all the basics you'd need (though it is yellow)

(also I'm assuming you live in the US as gigabyte has bad customer service elsewhere)

The only reason to get a Z97 board would be if you have or want to buy overclockable RAM and/or you have an SLI or Crossfire setup. Otherwise H97 or B85 would be better uses of your money. Getting an i7-4770 for free is pretty sweet. I have a slightly lesser version: the Xeon E3-1231v3, which is an i7-4770 with a couple of minor changes that are irrelevant for gaming and desktop use, and a 100 MHz slower quadcore turbo. And it's easily able to push 85-120 fps in AAA games when not gpu bound.

The 4770 is still a really strong gaming cpu though. If you look at GameGPU's cpu tests for games the i7-4770k at stock is usually one of the top scoring chips in their benchmarks, and a stock i7-4770k is an i7-4770 (same clocks and everything).
