1440p Gaming

So im planning on upgrading to a 1440p (probably in 3-6months) and what GPU should i get like, i didnt check any benchmarks for rx 480 etc etc so any suggestions ?

Eh, the RX 480 is what I'd consider to be kinda weak for 1440p gaming. I'd be shooting for the GTX 1070.

Why the need for an AMD card?

 

I don't where you're from, but there's the occasional R9 Fury sale on Newegg ($280-300). If you're that inclined to go for AMD, I suggest waiting a bit more for their Vega graphics cards.

Price of Nvidia is fucking bizzare where i live so yeh, but what exactly are Vega GPUs ?

I have a Fury X. I have a 1440p monitor.

GTAV at max settings gets me around 40-60 FPS. I can't actually max it due to a lack of needed VRAM (4GB limit qq). 

Use that as a reference and make your own decisions.

Their line of high-end GPUs following their Polaris cards. They're intended to compete with NVIDIA's Pascal.

1440p is 2560x1440 while 1080p is 1920x1080. 1080p/1440p is 0.5625, so running 1440p is 43.75% more intensive because that's how many more pixels there are. 

Running GTAV on 1080p at medium settings is piss easy in comparison to 1440p at ultra settings. 

... So what you said was basically complete nonsense. I'm not trying to make you feel bad. I'm educating.

3 to 6 months? AMD fan? wait for Vega. Now, it's 1070 or 980 ti minimum if you want high to ultra graphics. I'll cross on Fury as it is old and your upgrade is way in the future, but you could buy that used if you want.

You can find Fury for about the same price as GTX 1060.

Depends on where you live but I am from EU and I have seen one of local eshops selling it for €310 new...,Sapphire Nitro version.

See, GPUs increase by a good percentage every iteration (every time they release).

i.e. The GTX 770 is around 10-15% more powerful than the GTX 670. Same was similarly true of the 970 for the 770. 

You know what that is? That's exponential growth. That means that GPU performance is increasing very fast. 

But that doesn't matter. The reason it doesn't matter is because settings are multiplicative. Meaning, they multiply against each other to be more significant in terms of how they affect the performance.

If I have 1080p medium settings, and I bump that up to 1080p ultra settings. I'm going to increase the work my GPU has to do by like 2 fold. 

If I do the same, but for 1440p, I'd do the same. I'd make it 2 times harder to render.

If I do 1080p medium settings then go to 1440p medium settings, I'm increasing the work my GPU has to do by 2 fold as well. Even though it's only 50% more pixels, AA and such mean it has to do a lot more work anyway.

If I increase the resolution 50% (going from 1080p to 1440p), then also go from medium to ultra settings, it doesn't just raise my GPU's workload by 4x, it's more like 8 times. Or somewhere in between 4 and 8 times harder. 

It's an imperfect science, but in general, 1080p medium to 1440p ultra is a pretty significant leap in work for a GPU. 

But rather than just spew stuff you probably won't understand at you, I'll use benchmarks too.

Your math sucks.  You need to actually compare the total number of pixels from each resolution, not just the vertical lines.

1080p is 2073600 pixels

1440p is 3686400 pixels

 

2073600 - 368400 = 1612800

 

To increase 1080p by that many pixels is a 77% increase.

Gtx 1070 minimum - for max settings. newest games.
 

30fps or 60Fps for a bit older games.  Max settings.
Gtx 1060/  Rx 480.

ill wait for AMD Vega like some1 commented, i assume it will be cheaper and maybe a better performance
