One way to rescue the data would be with an Ubuntu live CD, you can access the data, but the parts have to be working. Plug the HDD into a new PC and use Ubuntu live CD to rescue the data

problem is that pc doesn't even want to turn on

The drive must be working. Check what type of connector it has, plug the drive into a spare PC with the right adapter and then, use the ubuntu liveCD

I guess both will work, but when you say usb to sata... do you mean you wanna use something like this:

http://www.amazon.in/Portable-External-Inch-Drive-Casing/dp/B012NTVM0M?tag=googinhydr18418-21&tag=googinkenshoo-21&ascsubtag=7d1fc3a7-8f14-4f9b-860c-4444cf73e502

LOL, i did not properly catch your drift. A usb to sata adapter will let you use the HDD as an external drive, in this case, there is no need to use LiveCD. But with an ide to sata adapter, live cd is required. But the drive has to use the sata standard

You need to know which connector your drive uses before thinking about which adapter you need.

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

Uhh, in the second pic, are the four pins on the right are for a molex connector? (In the IDE drive)

Yeah, old IDE usually are powered by molex. The 40 pin ribbon cable is just for data transfer.
