bios is it mandatory

so i got a notification today saying i can backup my new bios to download to a flash drive but i wanted to know if bios are like if its not broke don't fix it type thing cause im fine with all the bios i have now and i don't have a flash drive to use 

all i really wanted to know is if it wont affect me if i don't update my bios

If you have no need to update it, it will be fine. You risk bricking the bios by flashing it wrong.
