my current setup works ok. the bottle neck of my set up is my CPU. I need to buy a new motherboard to get a better CPU. I am unsure what motherboard to get. I am on a budget and I want to be able to upgrade it further in the future. I also need a new case.

My current set up

motherboard:  MSI 2AE0

CPU: AMD A8-5500

GPU: GTX 950

Memory: 8 GB

I will probably use the same GPU.

I was thinking of getting an intel I 5 CPU

I Probably won't be doing any overclocking.

Well first of all what is your budget and then we can figure out what you do, components needed etc.

Hunt for an h81 mobo + used Haswell i5 (browse through all of them, who knows what you'll find?). This would be a cheaper option than going with skylake by keeping your DDR3.

Like what @Imakuni said, get yourself the cheapest H81 mobo and a Haswell i5.
An i5-4460 should be powerful enough since the thing can apparently VR according to some SteamVR tests.
For your motherboard get H81 but I would advise getting B85 if you can afford it. I used to be fan of the lowest end chipsets but now I'm not because of the many compromises.

Ye, the lack of fan headers can sometimes be a pain...

CPU doesnt affect VR much. Ive seen people use 6100s. Albeit with a 980ti :P
