default permissions for root?

I accidentally set my root folder permissions to 777 when I was creating a directory for a media server

 

drwxrwxrwx  24 root root  4096 Oct 17 18:18 .
drwxrwxrwx  24 root root  4096 Oct 17 18:18 ..

what is the default and how to I get it back?

For me is 755. And after looking up on other sites it is default as 755 too. 

 

So should be 

 

drwx --- ---

Well, the default is for files to not be owned by root for one thing, but if you're fine with that, I think the default is 755 or 750, depending on how locked down it needs to be.

how do I fix the ownership ?

you might need a -R depending on how messed up it is inside but yeah, that should work.

i didn't use recursive when I messed it up so i shouldn't need it

Quite simple, "chown user directory" for directory/file ownership For permissions is chmod as already mentioned. A big difference (don't hit me too hard for being a bit twisted ) Also a tip for the next time, since you did not recursively changed the permissions you could have just checked any folder inside that one to see it's permissions.
