SSD installation help! :D

Hey guys!

 

So I just got a new SSD, the Toshiba Q300, I know it's not the best, but I got it for free So I plug it into my PC, but it's not showing up? I tried resetting the CMOS but it's still not showing up

Any advice?

 

Update: So installing the Toshiba utility program shows that the SSD is connected, but it's not showing up under "My computer"

Probably just needs to be initialized. Open up disk management (in computer management) and right-click on it.

My computer only shows formatted partitions, not physical drives. You need to format a partition onto the SSD using either Diskpart or Disk Management or a third party software if you like.

 

Edit: It also sounds to me that you're not going to fully utilize the SSD. SSDs aren't great at all for storing data. You want your operating system to reside on the SSD and all your data and most of your programs to be on the HDD. For that, this question you're asking is moot. You'd have to, back up your data, install a new instance of Windows onto the SSD, then format the HDD using the new Windows and then re-install your programs and get your data back from the backup. Either that or jump though a few hoops to clone and migrate your data.

I can't see it in my disk management, only my other harddisk

soo the disk isnt showing in disk management, but when I go into device manager its shown.

Sounds like a bad drive or a bad cable to me. It's not showing up even after a reboot? How about the device manager. Do you see it listed in there? Are there any errors in device manager for the drives or the sata controller?

It's shown, and the status is "This device is working properly." but comparing to my other disk, it says "device not migrated" while my other working harddisk are "device migrated"

I think that just means it wasn't installed while you upgraded to windows 10 from your old OS. I have two SSDs and both are working and saying that and I didn't upgrade to 10. I clean installed. Anyhoo. I wonder if uninstalling it from device manager and then searching for new hardware would help.

Ohh my bad, it seems like it was under my disk in disk management, its "unallocated" what then?

Right-click the unallocated space and format a partition onto it. It's pretty straight-forward. The default settings will make one full partition and give it the next free drive letter.
