I want to make a PC from used parts, but I'm not sure which option to choose. I plan on using it for like a year as the main system and then having it as a second rig.

1) LGA 775 - €165

  • Core 2 Quad Q9550 - €50
  • P45/X48 MB - €50
  • 8GB DDR2 - €35
  • Enermax T40 cooler - €30

2) LGA 1155 - €195-265

  • i5 3570 / 3570K  / i7 2600 - €90 / 120 / 110
  • H61/B75 -€35  Z77 - €75
  • 8GB DDR3 - €40
  • Enermax T40 cooler - €30

For the graphics card tha would be paired with any config

  • R9 280X  - €130
  • RX 460 4GB - €140

I have a PSU, HDD and a case that I can reuse.

CPU: i7 3770K | MB: EVGA Z77 FTW | RAM: HyperX Savage 2400Mhz 16GB | GPU: R9 280X Toxic | Cooler: Scythe Fuma | PSU: CoolerMaster B600

SSD: Crucial MX300 525GB | HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB - Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB

I'd go for the second system, the LGA 1155.
Get the 3570k, it's overclockable which means you'll be able to get more performance out of it.
The RAM, I'm assuming is 1600MHz? Even so, it's definitely better getting DDR3 over DDR2.
Could you tell me what motherboard you are planning on using on the second system?

Ram is 1333 or 1600, don't remember right now.

As for motherboards non oc are Gigabyte H61-DS2/ Biostar B75 something or Asus P8Z77-V LX.

Also which GPU?

For the newer stuff it's also a lot easier to get proper drivers / support for Windows 10... something you might want to look into (mostly for the motherboard).
Although for the prices mentioned in the 2nd system you could technically also put together low-end brand new stuff, so that is something I would personally consider.

Well, I'm not that crazy about W10, so I'd probably stick to W7. I don't have problem with buying used (usually better price to performance than new), so that's why I went that route.

Well remember that Microsoft is looking to get rid of supporting Windows 7 as soon as they can. So in terms of longevity it might not be the best choice.

I see your point about buying used but (at least where I live) it isn't as much of a bargain as it used to be, given the slow development in the last few years. When you're buying 5 years old crap at about 30% retail value or more I don't think that's necessarily such a great deal...
