So I most likely wont break anything unscrewing the backplate?

No, they are meant to come off :)

So, this holiday season I'm planning a few upgrades on my system. One of which is switching out my 7850 for a Asus Matrix R9280x. I love the bulk of the card! But I had a question about the backplate, can I remove it and paint it a different color. Provided I use paint that can handle the heat?

 

It would be nice because I plan on slowly redoing my whole rig and it would fit the design plan if i could paint it red.

Probably, but i would advise just going for an asus or msi one, as they are both red
