Hey Guys, i'm thinking of building a PC On a cheep (ish) budget. But I don't want to spend a lot on a current generation CPU with Kaby Lake round the corner. Thats why I opted for the I3 6100. BUt my main concern is how much it will bottleneck with a 1070. But take in to consideration that I just want a gaming rig after trying to use my mac, which makes my steam library quite old and not to demanding. I'll leave a PcPartPicker link.

You'll get a bottleneck. I'd recommend the 1060. Also, Replace the motherboard, you wont need it.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | CPU Cooler: Stock AMD Cooler | Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) | RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (4x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 CL16 | GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB Zotac Mini | Case: K280 Case | PSU: Cooler Master B600 Power supply | SSD: 1TB  | HDDs: 1x 250GB & 1x 1TB WD Blue | Monitor: 24" Acer S240HLBID | OS: Win 11 Pro.

Home Lab:  Lenovo ThinkCenter M82 Hyper-V Server 2022 | Dell OptiPlex 9020 Hyper-V Server 2022 | TP-LINK TL-SG108E | Cisco Catalyst C2960CG 8 Port Switch | HP MicroServer G8 SCCM Server | 2x Dell PowerEdge R630 Hyper-V Server 2022

I want to play 1440p which is why I got the 1070 so when Kaby Lake comes out i can get an equivalent to a 6600k

Get an ES Processor from Intel or wait until Zen. ES will put you in-line for an X99 CPU at a damn good price, but Zen is looking to be really impressive so far, so I might wait.

Also, not sure about that PSU

Also, the OP is building with a stupid case. If it's budget, lower the case a couple tiers and then get a better CPU/GPU/mobo combo from Newegg.

Thats my plan

You need 16GB min. Go dual channel 2x8GB kits

I was gonna get 2x8GB of vengeance LPX but it added another £50

Do it. 8 is NOT enough. I don't care what Linus, Jay, or even Jerry says... It's not enough. I have 16GB min in my Laptop at all times and in my main system I cringe if it's under 32GB.

Its totally worth the glass panel

Dude. Save up. Get a better CPU/GPU and then upgrade the case later.

Uhhh, no. You generally don't need more than 8GB for any single task.

But no one just does ONE thing. You have at least two tabs in Chrome open right now. If you are on 10 you have background tracking and Cortana, if you are like me, you also have drivers for your keyboard, mouse, gpu, and webcam/mic going. No one does ONE thing. That's where our favorite Tubbers are wrong.

You, sir, are the exception, not the rule. The vast majority of people don't use their computer as you apparently do.

I never said the basic simpleton like yourself should get 32, but I feel that 8 is simply not enough. With only 19 tabs in chrome, skype, origin, and steam running, I have 5.8GB used. So add a game that may need 5 or 6 more GB to run smoothly at high textures. It just isn't enough.

That's because Windows will cache your available RAM, it'll use whatever you have. I have 7 GB being cached at idle with a few chrome tabs open, but that's because I have 24 GB to spare. Windows will store whatever it can in your RAM as a cache so it can access it faster later on, but you won't see a real performance hit with not having that.

There is something called "being better safe, than sorry" Because even you can agree that one 8gb is horrible and if the OP wanted 8, he should at least go with a 4x2 for dual channel performance?

Bruh... I think you're confusing this with VRAM. There are an infinitesimally small number of games that need 6 GB of RAM

Dude.. No.. Every one of my games I launch sees a HUGE performance hit by me having less RAM. I'm not an engineer (Cisco tech, actually) but I do know my way around some benchmarks and I can tell you that RAM makes a HUGE difference.Of course.. That makes me wonder if it's part of the "lottery"....

Hmm.
