Do you have enough money for an SSD? Get an A-Data SP550 120/240GB if you can.

I really don't see the point in SSDs. They make everything faster but do you not have time?

Not just faster but more responsive. It's usually a good idea to use a 120GB SSD for your OS and programs as it's easy to keep important files away from a corrupted OS if it's on another drive.

And how do you decide what files go where. Can you just "lock" an SSD?

When you install Windows, you'll select the SSD (it'll be the only one you attach to the PC at this point). Then you'll install your programs and what-nots (highly technical term) to the SSD. Once that's done, you attach your HDD and assign a drive letter and move your [username] folder targets to the HDD. It's simple and anyone would be able to help you out. 

 

As far as programs, they have a custom install option that lets you select what drive to install to.

 

One other benefit to using a 120GB SSD is that if you want to clone your OS, you won't have any size issues as the drive will fit into any other size. This isn't easy with a 1TB HDD since they have to be trimmed down to fit unto smaller SSD's later if you decide to upgrade.

In my opinion, yes. It's a great thing to have a PC boot (fully) in about 10". You don't need the fastest, most expensive SSD to reap the rewards. As long as the controller is able to handle a decent load consistently, it should be a nice addition.

 

A-Data SP550 120GB for, I think, $40 is well worth it.

Perhaps I'd purchace the SSD first, load the OS onto it along with some of the main programs, and then get a hard drive soon after. I'm on a tight budget.
