Hello!
So I have for a while now (read my latest forum post here) been thinking on buying either RX 480 or Gtx 1060, but one key question is: How much heat matters
As you can see in the other post, I found a great deal on Gigabyte RX 480 G1 Gaming with a 700W PSU also from Gigabyte for almost free, but this graphics card does really heat up according to JazyTwoCents (here),
however, I was wondering of how much heat really matters, will it perform any worse than a default RX 480 with a better cooler (I know that it can't overclock, but you can't really overclock RX 480 much anyways)
I will not be using this card for more than a few years before I upgrade once again anyways.
Thanks

Regards,
olesien

It will only affect performance once it gets to 80-90C and thermal throttling kicks in, anything lower is fine.

It matters because you will hit the thermal limit on the card easily which causes throttling. Throttling is when the card downclocks itself so it doesn't burn itself out. Lower clocks = less performance. It would be like you bought an RX 470 instead of a 480.

If there are no other 480 options except the gigabyte, then yea, get the 1060.

Well yes there are, a lot, but none comes with the 700W PSU for free.

What PSU is it anyway?

Look on the link that was in the thread (the first one)

I've never heard of it so I have no way of knowing if it's a good quality PSU. Since they're giving it away so cheap, I'm gonna assume it isn't, so you're not missing out on much and probably better if you didn't get it. A bad PSU can take out your entire system. The amount of wattage isn't always the whole story.

True, looked okay decent though..
I don't really like Gigabyte anyway, I am going for the Evga gtx 1060 SC Gaming, looks great ;)

Snip

well if i had to guess I would say that Jay just got a bad unit (I've seen the video). There is no reason for that cooler to perform the way it did. its cooler is capable of giving a lot more cooling potential than the stock cooler on a 480 is, but his results didn't really find that at all.

If its a REALLY good deal I would say go for it, otherwise I would recommend a 1060 6GB (the EVGA SC Gaming is a great little unit if you're considering that one) as it is a slightly better card. No idea on the PSU though.

Ok thanks!
The PSU looks fine to me, I haven't seen any hate on it atleast.
If it doesn't work, I could just get my money back.
Can a PSU make the whole system break

If the PSU is trashy enough, absolutely. it could fail and take everything with it. higher quality units are much less likely to fail, and are much less likely to take other components with them if they DO happen to fail. and when i say "higher quality" that has absolutely nothing to do with wattage or 80+ rating. its possible to make a 1000W Gold rated PSU that is nothing more than a tinderbox haha. So do your research. as a quick guide you can consult this tier list. the higher the tier a PSU, the better its quality. for your needs I would recommend at least tier 3 if you can, as that is where you start getting units with decent power regulation to allow for optimal overclocking stability (seeing as you have a 6600k). if a PSU doesn't show up there that doesn't mean its bad though... just make sure to do your own checking =)
