HD 7990 CrossfireX GPU Usage Problem

Go to solution Solved by Wolfur,

The other games are Dishonored, Crysis 3, Crysis 1, Battlefield 3, Metro, Skyrim etc. Most of them have a crossfire profile.. so i think i buy in the bottleneck.. just googled it and, yeah. AMD's pretty bad...

so what should i go with? a i5 4440, a i5 4670K or even a i7 4770k to not bottleneck the Card?

If you don't want to overclock, get:

Xeon e3-1230v3 - it's i7 4770 with different name and without integrated GPU.

+

some motherboard, like MSI H87-G43.

if you want to overclock, get i5 4670k or 4770k (depending on how much money you have, i7 will be a bit better)

+

Z87 motherboard for example MSI Z87-g45 Gaming or MSI Z87-G55.

Hi all,

i recently bought a 7990 for a damn good price (500€) but unfortunately i do not get full usage in every game. Mostly it is around 20-40% per GPU. One Exception: Tomb Raider! There i get full GPU Usage (90-99%) and the friggin high FPS.

I have tried everything... Disabling ULPS -> no difference, forcing another Crossfire profile -> no difference.

Tried different drivers.. Currently at the 13.11 Beta

Clocks of the GPUs are slightly overclocked -> 925MHz to 1GHz

PowerLimit is on +20%

I use Afterburner OSD to evaluate the Usage.

My System:
AMD FX 8120 @ 4 GHz

Crosshair V Formula

HD 7990 (PowerColor non-reference) This one

be quiet Power Zone 850W PSU

Please help me out

thats mostly because of your cpu but dont expect it to run at %100 with all games.

Is my CPU really THAT much of a Bottleneck? I cant imagine that by any means... But then why does it only crack up above 40% in Tomb Raider and no other game?

no i mean gpu usage dont expect it to run at %100 at every game because you might experience cpu bottleneck.

FX8120 is not that bad with new optimizations but still bit early to talk about it

Yes, your CPU is that bad... you are trying to run a crossfire 7970 which both need a fast single thread on a CPU with one of the worst single thread we had for a while... even Phenoms had faster single thread, even really ooooold intel had faster single thread...

Get new CPU if you want to rip the benefits of crossfired 7970.

What games did you not get good GPU load? If they are non-demanding games like Source games then I wouldn't worry.

CoolerMaster CM 690 II Basic | Intel i7-2600 | CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ 2x Zotac GTX 1070 AMP! Edition

Asus P8Z77-V LK | 2 x 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MHz CL9 | SeaSonic M12ii 850W 80+ Bronze Crucial M4 128GB

Okay so would a i5 4440 be enough? Then i could upgrade to Intel Haswell including a Mobo (ASRock Fatal1ty H87) for < 250€

I guess i would go with that then if that CPU does not bottleneck.. Btw: how many PCIe lanes does 1150 have again?

H87 > 1 PCI-E 16X

Z87 > 1 PCI-E 3.0 16X or 2 PCI-E 3.0 8X or 1 PCI-E 3.0 ×8 + 2 PCI-E 3.0 ×4

not sure but it might be 24

This could also be attributed to a lack of crossfire profiles in the games you play. Tomb raider was developed alongside AMD so it definitely has a crossfire profile. What are the other games you play as they may not be compatible with crossfire?

Corsair 350D - ASUS Maximus V Gene - Intel 3770K @ 4.6Ghz - Corsair H100i - G-skill Trident X 2666Mhz 4x4Gb - 2 x EVGA GTX 680 Classified 4Gb @ 1250Mhz - Corsair 860i - 2 x Samsung 840 Pro 240GB (Raid 0)

If you don't want to overclock, get:

Xeon e3-1230v3 - it's i7 4770 with different name and without integrated GPU.

some motherboard, like MSI H87-G43.

Z87 motherboard for example MSI Z87-g45 Gaming or MSI Z87-G55.
