Storage Upgrade Options

Hey,

I have a 1TB Seagate Barracuda which has unfortunately filled up. I am looking to upgrade and was wondering is a 500GB Samsung SSD and a 4TB WD Red overkill?

 

Pricing is preferably within the 300 pound mark.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You won't need a WD Red drive. Blues or Blacks will be fine.

Ok thanks, whats the difference though out of curiosity. Isnt black for mass storage or something?

The differences between Blues and Blacks come down to noise, speed, warranty, and power draw. Capacity is not really affected.

Ok thanks a lot. Which is quietest because that is actually one of the most annoying thing the Barracuda right now. It is so damn noise

If you're only going to use it to store files you wont access often you can get a WD Green that has an aggressive spin-down (no noise).

Found this, thanks for mentioning it anyway.

 

Green: Slowest, quietest, lowest power

Blue: Standard drive

Black: Performance tuned, faster, potentially noisier and more power hungry

Modern "Green" and "Blue" drives have been merged into the same name: Blue.

OK didn't know that. Also a quick question if I get the SSD, how do I transfer the OS over to the SSD from the HDD

Most SSDs will come with cloning software you can use. If not, a program called MiniTool Partition Wizard comes with that functionality, but most people will recommend a fresh installation of Windows over doing a clone.

Would a fresh install of Windows mean I would have to backup all my data before I am able to do it?

Slowest maybe but 150MB/s is still plenty compared to 200MB/s (Green vs black) and thats perfect scenarios of sequential data.

Its just another option
