Hi all,

So I will give you all a background on the project. I am part of an FSAE team called Oxford Brookes Racing (shameless plug to our website - https://obr.brookes.ac.uk/). I am part of the controls team and last year we developed wireless telemetry using an Arduino and an XBee. This year, after it being a very unreliable connection we are looking at using a WiFi network to send all our data. If we have a fairly standard laptop the receiving end, what kind or AP would i need to be looking at to get about 1-2Km of range? Thanks for all the help!

No normal AP would be able to do it, you would need something like this:

PSU Tier List | CoC

Gaming Build | FreeNAS Server

Spoiler

i5-4690k || Seidon 240m || GTX780 ACX || MSI Z97s SLI Plus || 8GB 2400mhz || 250GB 840 Evo || 1TB WD Blue || H440 (Black/Blue) || Windows 10 Pro || Dell P2414H & BenQ XL2411Z || Ducky Shine Mini || Logitech G502 Proteus Core

Spoiler

FreeNAS 9.3 - Stable || Xeon E3 1230v2 || Supermicro X9SCM-F || 32GB Crucial ECC DDR3 || 3x4TB WD Red (JBOD) || SYBA SI-PEX40064 sata controller || Corsair CX500m || NZXT Source 210.

I think making use of some form of cellular connection would be your best bet.

Just to clarify, we will have the AP or similar on the car itself and use a laptop to connect to it. We will be at a racetrack, so basically and airfield with very little other than distance between the laptop and the car. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately that's not practical to do with a single AP - you'd need a mesh of AP's across the track to provide wireless coverage.
