Simply put: my current desktop is shit xD. I have no idea how old it is, because I bought it second hand from someone couple years ago. I have swapped out some parts (ram and gpu) in the meantime and  added an SSD, but instead of swapping out more, I decided it is time for something completely new. And this time I'm planning on having something good :D

But although I have build some computers before (aka I have experience in putting shit together) I have basically no experience planning a new build and deciding which parts are best for me. That's where I need your help :D

So here we go:

1. Budget & Location

At the moment I have put aside €1400 for this project. I live in the Netherlands if that matters :P. I will most likely order stuff from https://azerty.nl/ if anyone wants to know. But maybe I'll run into something better, i have no idea. I cannot order things from amazon afaik, since I think you need a credit card for it, which I do not have.

Also: if somehow in this proces it turns out that budget is not really doable, I can just wait another month and spend more ^^. Atm I am in the comfortable position of having more money coming in then going out per month (student loan xd).

2. Aim

I would love to go completely overkill of course, but let's (probably) not do that :P. But if its within my budget to throw in random shit I don't really need, I'm more then willing to do that haha (not gonna happen I guess).

Anyways, what will I be doing with it?

  1. Gaming of course :D. Now you'll all probably gonna ask me what games. I'm not really sure yet as the game I play the most atm is osu!, but I do plan on buying Mirror's Edge Catalyst and GTA V at some point. Generally speaking I kinda want to just not have to worry about "if I can play this game or not". I'm just gonna drop the probably not feasible "future proof" in here. Lets say being able to play "current games" at "somewhat high" settings.

Oh and I also plan (not near future, but it's gonna happen sometime) to have a 4 monitor setup (row of 3 + 1 on top) and it's a nice bonus if I can play games on those 3 with that thing where your game spans all the way across your monitors (forgot how that shit is called)
  2. Being able to run said games alongside OBS (twitch) is a must
  3. Im the sort of guy who has billions of chrome tabs open and millions of chrome extensions running in the background. Basically I want to be able to do lots of shit at the same time.
  4. Virtual PC's for linux-development purposes. Also development in general, I'm a programmer, so not having to wait a billion hours for a program to compile is kinda required I guess.
  5. I'll probably do the occasional video-editing (adobe premiere/after effects) and stuff.

In summary: lots of different shit

3. Monitors

At the moment I have two 1080p60hz monitors + one shitty no clue what res 4:3 thing. I'm not planning on upgrading them anytime soon, but as mentioned further in the future I want better ones. I'm not really interested in stuff like 4k, I am interested in higher refresh rate (144hz?) because osu! But that's future stuff, not for now.

4. Peripherals

I have everything I need, including windows licence (as I will transfer all that shit over from my current system)

5. Why are you upgrading?

Well, what I said at the beginning of this post.

(lets expand that default list with some extra points)

6. Absolutely unnecessary useless things for no reason at all

There are two things I also kinda want, although they are almost certainly completely unnecessary. I want to have more (or at least the same) amount of RAM as a friend of mine (thats 64GB lol). I know it is supersilly and doesnt make any sense, but bragging rights I guess. Also (probably less useful) I want one of those M.2 SSD's (also bragging rights).

7. Case

With my current system I came to absolutely HATE small cases. I absolutely do NOT care AT ALL how the freaking thing looks like. As long as it has ample space for everything and lots of room for cable management (which is pretty much non-existing in my current system). I have plenty of space to put that thing somewhere, so I dont care about its size. So I'd rather have a waay to big case then one that's a little bit too small.

I have one odd requirement: I want space for a CD/DVD drive, since I'm fairly certain at some point my dad will probably randomly be like "yo, can you copy this DVD for me plz kthxbye". I have two, so if I can manage to put them both in there: INSTANT COPY LOL (well, at least without having to copy it to my computer first). But then again, it is 2016, so I might need to tell my dad to go somewhere else hahaha.

Also I have a card-reader thing, I think it is the side of a floppy-reader, which would be fancy if I can put that in my new system as well.

What have I done myself?

The best I could do myself was googling around and asking some friends. This is my list so far. It is by far not complete, but it has my current thoughts, and I would like to know what you guys think. (Please tell me if it is complete bullshit and recommend me something better, I'm sort of a noob).

  • For CPU I was thinking either a i7-6700K, seems to be the most recommended "gaming CPU", but I also came along the i7-5820K which has more cores and could probably benefit me me? (multitasking, VM's, streaming)
  • For motherboard I don't really know what to look for. A good friend of mine uses that i7-5820K and has a Asrock X99 Extreme4, so I guess thats a good candidate :P (haven't checked if it does support that M.2 thing lol, not the most important thing)
  • That same friend uses a "Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler", I am temped to do that as well, but I'm not sure if it is necessary and it'll probably blow my budget. (OC? :P)
  • For RAM I was planning to open up https://tweakers.net/ (dutch price compare website), filter on the specs I need and pick something random from a reputable brand I recognize and has nice speed. I absolutely do not care about "fancy colorful" heat-spreaders (unless they provide a performance benefit)
  • For GPU, I havent really decided yet, I might just go with a 1070, but I'm fairly certain that'll cost me my budget, but I have a feeling that with it I don't have to worry about at all about game compatibility. Dunno how fancy Adobe Premiere/After Effects is with stuff like using the GPU for video rendering. If I go this route, I'll probably just wait a month like i said :P (or borrow some money from someone)
  • As for storage, internal and external, I'm just gonna reuse what I already have.
  • For case? tbh, no clue...
  • PSU, havent even started thinking about it, since I am not certain what I will need.
  • Have I forgotten something?

If you're still here after this massive wall of text: huge thanks! I can probably manage to put some stuff together that is probably not the worst thing in the world. But I hugely appreciated if I could get some feedback on this.

Also I welcome any feedback on how to improve this post (if its needed), I'm kinda new here :D. Please don't be too hard on me :$..

Small reminder that if my wishes/requirements go hugely over budget (which I somehow don't think is unlikely) I have the option to wait till I have more money.

added OC as possible reason for the liquid cooler + forgot to mention amount of "useless" ram

If youre going 6700k (best bet) mobo choice would be asus z170-a or msi krait gaming 3x but go for the asus one if possible

logicalincrements.com it has exactly your price range. set the country to netherlands and switch the i5 for the i7 6700k. go for a 2x8gb ram kit, later you can buy another set of ram if you need them since VM's often require quit a bit of ram depending on what you want with them. i wouldn't follow this site completely but it gives a really good baseline, as a mobo i would advice the asus z170 pro gaming, i own it and its amazing, the only downside is that i find it ugly as hell.

Looks pretty gud, thanks <3. Altho I dont need the WD internal drive, since I have internal hard drives enough (I have about 6 or so randomly laying around xd)

Also gpu if the 1070 is too much get a 1060 6gb

Good call, thanks, kinda sortof forgot that thing existed lol.

I listed 750w, because you can get 1070 sli without changing psu.

I dont think I'll sli anytime soon. But also, never say never right?

Thanks! I'll check it out. About the "ugly as hell downside", literally cant care less. My system has to perform. Looking pretty is a bonus to me.

Also, additional question I guess: I've read/heard somewhere (forgot where, sorry) that having more cores, so i7-5820K instead of i7-6700K, is better if you plan on streaming and video editing, which I indeed plan to do. How true is this?

(As you may have noticed, I like bragging rights xd, so being able to say, yo look at my core-count bruh, is kinda nice I guess, xd)

yes it is better if you can overclock it just as far as the i7 6700k, clock for clock they are very similar but the price increase is quite steep, unless you know you really need the extra cores i would go for the i7 6700k

But the cpu itself costs more (€60-70) and its the 2011 socket which means the mobo is gonna cost €60-70 more

If there is a reaaaly good reason, I'm more then willing bite the "costing more" bullet (I'll have to wait a bit longer, like i explained, or borrow some, I'll be able to pay back fairly soon). It just has to make sense :P. If somehow I need (random example) €2k for some good reason, why not :P

So lets say, hypothetically I go for that more cores, I overclock it like @tlink mentioned, I have more horsepower for streaming (and probably VM) purposes. Are there any downsides regarding mobo choices that is left? Or is it "just" more expencive. (Like I want to be able to get my 64GB RAM somewhere in the future if I dont do it now :P, which I just noticed, I forgot to mention the actual amount in the "useless things" part of my original post LOL, guess i'll edit that in now)

the x99 chipset's only downside is that its older and support for some things like m.2 storage as boot drive is lacking at times. just read reviews of it before making a final decision on the mobo and make sure it supports the ramspeeds you want. also make sure it overclocks well, there can be a huge difference in ability to overclock from a cheap entry mobo to a mid range to an expensive mobo (But mostly between entry and mid range the difference is big)

Lets look at it from the other side. If using that 6700k, do you expect any "problems"/downsides with being able to stream while gaming?

yea maybe, if not now than maybe in the future. but for streaming i find it better to have a dedicated machine with a capture card anyways, you should probably explore that too before basing a decision on the load of streaming if you still own this machine. the i7 6700k is a really powerful cpu, an i5 6600k is really hard to bottleneck already by just gaming, the i7 6700k is just(not exactly but for simplicity sake) an i5 6600k with double the threads so unless your streaming is going to hit the cpu just as hard as the game is then no, the i7 6700k will probably not bottleneck you in any noticeable way shape or form beyond the statistical numbers. i doubt you would notice the real world difference, but that is up to you to decide. personally i wouldn't buy anything above an i7 6700k because i would never need all that power in the coming 2 years, its a really high end cpu.

ok, so i'll most likely be just fine with a 6700k I guess. Either way, it is a huuuuuuuge upgrade compared to what I have right now. So I think i'll just go for that. Sounds like any benefits of that other one is probably not worth it for the downsides (mostly cost lol).

I'll continue thinking about this somewhere tonight, have stuff to do now :P.
