Modifications

First "mod" was to remove only one rubber base.

Did a Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool, memory test. Passed.

Will do a clean install of W7 Pro 64bit.

Perform some HDD health scans.

Buy a Xeon X5687(3.6GHz)-77(3.5)-72(3.2)-67(3.1) with 4C/8T or X5690(3.5)-80(3.33)-75(3.0) with 6C/12T

X5690 is close to a i7-3820 - Of course they have different cores and threads.

I recently did an x58 scratch build (listed in my sig)  with an i7 950. Overclocking on the board I have is hampered though because you can't adjust much.  I'm also thinking about a 6c/12t xeon but only if i can get it cheap .  Little point otherwise

What do you plan to use the system for ? Anything specific ?  Or just a fun project ?

I plan to use it for downloading stuff, and gaming. My HP desktop is SFF and the GTX-650 does not fit. I contemplated hacking up the case, but I was set on buying a used system with atleast 4C/8T, was eyeballing the Dell T3500 hard for some odd reason, not for OC'ing but for the cheap Xeon factor I guess. I found most of the ASUS P6T motherboards were expensive, and for that fact all of the X58 mobo's were always just so expensive. I guess they are popular. Another thing I found is that the E3 processors were expensive too. The great balance of price was the LGA-1366.

Gaming rig for sure, overclocking....oh yeah!!!  :)

Downloading music and videos.

Mass storage.

Yes, its just a project for fun. I have a lot of time on my hands now, so I need to fill it with something I can do in the house. I might dabble in home server, and Virtual Machines. I looked at Bitcoin Mining, but that does not interest me in any way.
