Hi.

So first thing first. I have a fx-6300 and I know it's bottlenecking with my gpu (nvidia geforce gtx 970)

And I was wondering if I should upgrade to the fx-8350 or upgrade to i5-6600k and get a new mobo as well?

If I am upgrading to Intel the only fear I have is not being able to use my ssd and hdd and have to reinstall windows.

If what you're asking is, will the i5 be noticeably better than the FX-8350? Yes. Is it worth the additional cost? That's a judgment for you to make, in reality it will mean some 10% more framerates on a GTX 970.

Also, no reason not to get the cheaper FX-8300 if you can find it for less. You can then OC it to match the speed of an 8350.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

If you go with the FX 8350, then all your data should be available, because it is another AMD processor, meaning that you should already have the drivers. If you go with the i5 6600k, then things get complicated. If you take your SSD and HDD out from your current system and put it in your new PC, then all your data will still be there. Unfortunately, you might have to do a new clean install of windows because AMD and Intel use different drivers. If your PC is able to boot up with the old drives, then just install the new drivers and you will be all set. If you worry about losing your data, then don't. When installing Windows 10 everything is where you left it, from your first icon on the desktop to the last driver in system32. I recommend that you go with an i5 6600k and a Z170 Motherboard, as you will be able to overclock it. It will be futureproof, as the 8350 bottlenecks even a GTX 1060. The i5 6600k will give you better overclocks as well as better single core performance. If you worry about bottlenecks, then overclock it. Even a GTX 1080 does not get bottlenecked by the i5 6600k. If you want good overclocks, go with an aftermarket cooler instead of the stock cooler. The cooler master hyper 212 evo is a budget friendly and efficient cooler.

That's why I break mine twice.

i am currently using the msi 970 gaming mobo (note: this is my very first build)

That should handle an 8350, and newer games are using the threads so it will do as well as an i5 6500, if not better in newer games that can use the threads.

fyi I don't really care about the cost as long as it doesn't go over 600$ for mobo and cpu. plus im planing on upgrading during blackfriday/cypermonday (idk if pc hardware would be on sell or not

In that case a 6600K and overclocking components (Z170 motherboard, good aftermarket cooler) are your best choice. You will also need new RAM, and it will all cost you around $400, probably less during a hardware sale.

It will work, but it won't be great (it's a loud cooler imo, I have one). Popular CPU coolers that are better are the Thermalright Macho (any version), The Noctua NH-D14 and D15, even the NH-U14S, and the be quiet! Shadow Rock Slim or Dark Rock3.

But you should test with the EVO first, and if you don't mind it, keep it.

You won't have to change it if it's an M12II EVO 620W. You can use it for SLI (up to 200W TDP cards) as well.
