hi guys,

I was planning to get a gtx 1060 and i5 6600. I originally did not want to overclock.

Now I'm not sure. So I need your advice.

If I was to change the B150 mobo and i5 6600 cpu for a Z170 and i5 6600k, how much gaming benefit would I notice (not actually get but realistically notice) from the more expensive option including a fairly conservative overclock.

Please note, no matter what I choose it will be air cooled only (currently going for Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO). Also, I do not want an i7 cpu, that will wait until next year when I'm planning a build with kaby lake, a top of the line gpu, plus whatever next gen ssd and memory is available then.

To help answer, the PC will be connected to a 4K smart tv which I will set to 1080p when gaming.

Current build list:

i5 6600

Asus B150 Plus

Crucial BX200 250gb SSD

Palit 1060 Dual 6gb

Corsair Vengeance 16gb (2x8) DDR4 2400 mhz

Corsair CXM 500 watt

Game Max Silent Gaming case

Arctic case fans (1x140mm, 1x120mm)

The cost of the build (not including OS or peripherals) is around €900. I don't mind the extra cost of the Z170 and unlocked cpu as long it is actually worth it, not just  2-3 fps in games and Windows starting up 2 seconds quicker.

Thanks for any help.

ok will do, thanks

The H7 is the minimum I would recommend for an OC. If you can't get that, think about the 212 Evo or X.

I know it sounds odd but the only place I can put a pc is in the living room where I already have the 4k tv, that's why I started planning a build in the first place. As mentioned, the above build is only temporary anyway, at some point the 4k TV will make much more sense as a monitor.

The H7 doesn't seem to be available where I live. I found this though - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cryorig-H5-Universal-processor-cooler/dp/B00MBTOY2S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474561973&sr=8-1&keywords=cryorig+h7

but it doesn't list socket 1151, only socket 1150..

Socket 1150, 1156, 1155 and 1151 all use the same mounting. The H5 is better than the H7. Are you in the UK? If so, try ebuyer.

Consider moving to a H110 motherboard and sticking with the locked cpu. Moving to an unlocked cpu on Z170 will not make a noticeable performance difference unless the cpu is overclocked.

what is the benefit of the H110 compared to B150?
