Headphones/Mic combo vs Headset

Alright so here's the dilemma : I've got $200 CAN to spare and my audio upgrade is soooooooo past it's due date. Now I'm wondering if I should go for a pair of headphone with a standalone mic OR a pair of headset.

I mainly intend on gaming, no in fact it's literally the only thing I do on my PC. So is the added audio quality worth getting for advanced immersion or should I go for a headset? I do both competitive gaming and solo gaming.

I personally prefer having a standalone mic, the quality is usually better and it means that the headphones dont look weird outside of playing game, thus you can use them outside without looking weird with a bright rgb set of cans on you ears

Headphones and standalone mic will be better quality.  You can get a pair of sennheiser HD 518 and a modmic 4.0 for that price and still have money to spare.  The quality will be better than any  headset you can buy for the price.  If you must get a headset go with the hypercloud x.

I recommend the open headphones since you say you do competitive gaming.  It will give you a better soundstage to hear footsteps.

It depends how much you care for mic quality. You can buy some cheap mic for like $5 and it will work for VoIP like Discord or TS3 just fine. I'd say prioritize headphones over microphone if you're just gaming.

I'm pretty much sure you can get a decent quality headset for like $100, I'm currently using Mad Catz F.R.E.Q. 4D just to try out the technology, but overall sound quality is quite nice for gaming.  Why spend another $100 if you don't have to?

yeah I had been told by a few friends after hesitating on buying a hyperx cloud 2 headset that if I really wanted an audio revolution, go for headphones + mic.

I'll definitely do that then

The main reason for this is that you are paying a premium for a so called "gaming" headset.  I made that mistake at first and ended up overpaying for my first few headphones.  Once I got away from that the quality/price of my headphones improved.  Those sennheiser headphones will give you better quality over pretty much any gaming headphone you can buy with the exception of the g4meone headphones, which it will be equal to for half the price.  If you're lucky you can find them cheaper.  I know I've seen them on sale for like $50 USD.

Well anything that has "gaming"in their name will be overpriced anyways
