Need some advice please.

IAEInferno

I don't want my electricity bills to go too high, I would like a recommendation for a good UPS that's energy efficient with my build and a Power supply that would be efficient with it.

 

PC Build

 

It says max power consumption is at 480W but the Monitor, Speakers and Network router Power consumption is not added which I'm planning to put into the sockets of the recommended USP you guys will probably recommend to me :D.

(without Monitor, Speakers, Router)=480W
PC=130W- 480W
Monitor=12- 50W
Speakers= 9-40W
Router=5-20W
Minimum power consumption:PC(130W)+Monitor(12W)+Speakers(9W)+Router(5W)=Minimum(156W)
Total Max power consumption: PC(480)+Monitor(50W)+Speakers(40W)+Router(20W)=Maximum(590W)

 

Watt consumption range for PC Only: 130W-480W

 

Watt consumption range for PC,Monitor,Speakers and router: 156W-590W

 

Furthermore, should I get a Super EVGA 650W 80+plat or the 750W 80+plat one?  What would be the better choice for lower electricity bills?

 

So I would like to have a suggestion for what Power Supply I should get(650W platinum vs 750Wplatinum) and a UPS that's very energy efficient for lower electricity bills :D.

They are both a good choice, i would go for the 750 W for the upgrade potential, but the 650W should be fine too.

The UPS itself won't be any more efficient than the actual hardware pulling the power from it. All it will do is put a battery in between the power source and your hardware, protecting if from surge spikes and giving it a little juice to shut down properly if power goes out (or keep working for a while if it's important).

 

I would suggest some breathing room, around 1500VA (roughly 800-900W if I'm not mistaken). Go for line interactive too, I think this is a no-brainer. With that kind of power you will have ample of usable time left in a power outage scenario to finish your work and shut down, while still having room for future peripherals added.

I have a separate PC for doing work, I will mostly use this PC for gaming, movies ,music. I just need the right amount of time to shut it down before the battery of the UPS runs out.

Alright. Then I think 1200VA should be more appropriate. Keep in mind that the wattage you see on your computer isn't what your computer draws from the wall. Depending on the efficiency of your PSU we could be talking for about 100 extra watts there.

So basically I would need to plug in my UPS system 24/7 and if I'm using my computer then I would probably consume extra 100W as wasted heat energy? How many watts does the UPS consume if the PC, monitor and speakers are turned off but are still plugged in to the UPS?

I can't tell you for sure. You'd have to measure it with specialized hardware to be sure. Also I'm not 100% where the power is being wasted, but every PSU has a certain degree of efficiency curve (depending on the quality), usually topping at 50% usage. So let's say you have a good 800W PSU and you are drawing 400W from it. Let's say it's being 90% efficient at that wattage, that would mean that the actual power drawn from the wall is 10% more, 440W. 

 

There are some cheap gadgets that you can put between your power source and the rest of your hardware which will give you a pretty accurate reading.

Thanks, what would be your wild guess of the power consumption of a UPS being IDLE?

Nothing too much, I'd say around 5-15w depending on the eye candy (if there's a back-lit LCD or not, etc). But you would have to verify that in the spec sheet of whatever UPS you're looking to buy.

It's really hard to guess since it varies between different models, year manufactured, etc. That one looks like it could be on the higher side, perhaps around 20W tops? Keep in mind that if your battery is not full for whatever reason, obviously it will be drawing extra power to fill it up. By the way, seems like a solid UPS.

I never actually bothered, but I could check the 2000VA once I'm home (will just use what it says on the screen, though). I need to dig out that meter I have to properly test both, though. I'd say don't stress it too much. Make sure you protect your hardware, that's the most important.

They both run fairly cool when idle, around room temperature really. It's mostly when the battery is used that they will get hot, the 2000VA even has fans firing up when that happens and it gets kinda loud :P
