Hi, I'm still trying to find out the vest option to get into pc gaming, and I had this question: are the 10xx GPU's on the latest laptops upgradable, like simply changeable? I.e this one http://www.cdiscount.com/informatique/ordinateurs-pc-portables/msi-pc-portable-gamer-ge62vr-6rf-045fr-15-6/f-10709-9s716jb12045.html

Oh and I guess cpus are not really changeable on laptops?

Cheers :)

The short answer is yes and no, it depends.

The laptop needs to have an MXM slot to be replaceable/upgradable, which is usually not obvious unless you find someone who cracked open the laptop to confirm. These are usually only on "desktop replacement" laptops. However, even if you get a laptop with an MXM module, you run into another issue: lack of availability. Most MXM boards you have to get from eBay. Worse still, they're often $200+ more than the desktop version's MSRP (for example, MXM GTX 980Ms will go for $700 easily).

In other words, this route is not really worth it.

I would've thought that with the desktop 10xx in pc's it would've been made possible but thanks for the answer! :)

MXM has been around for 10 years or so, so it's always been possible. The problem is while the interface and board dimensions are standardized, nothing else is. I believe ASUS has laptops use MXM, but the way the chips are arranged makes it incompatible with someone else's cooling solution. And then there's the problem that the cooling solution in the laptop may be good for just that GPU. If you upgrade, you risk putting a higher thermal load than the system is capable of handling.

The only way to get desktop upgradability on a laptop is for all of the manufacturers to agree on a standard. Good luck with that. :3

Oh okay thanks for the precision :D

Yeah they're really annoying each having their own standard..

I'll consider getting a decent/good desktop and a low end or chromebook then ^^ Not for now anyway
