Ok so my dad decided we need a new media centre pc, he told me price didnt matter and to have some fun with it so that it will be useful for future expansion such as some light gaming and whatnot, for now there will be no gpu, the psu case and blu ray drive we already have. Planned parts list as fallows wouldn't mind some opinions.

Cpu: 4670k probably stock with a noctua nh-l9i cooler for sheer silence over the crappy stock cooler

Mobo: Either an asus gryphon or gene not 100% yet

Ram: dual channel 16gb vengeance memory probably 1866mhz although hes set on 2400mhz despite my arguements

Hd: 1tb seagate sshd

Case: silverstone ML03

Tim: Arctic mx4

Later on hes thinking he might do a light oc on the cpu if the little noctua gives us enough headroom, the ambient temp that this pc will be in is usually around 17 degrees because its an air conditioned basement and also add a gpu for some occasional gaming and what not but its main use is as a media centre. He basically wants to overbuild it and make a mini powerhouse to add into our theater room just cause he has the disposable income for it. any thoughts on how we might improve it other then putting in a 4770k over a 4670k.

Also no amd hes an intel/nvidia fanboy and please dont say this is a waste of money and its far to much for a media centre. i know it is and so does he but he thinks its funny and wont change his mind.

4670k is overkill. A celeron/pentium would be better suited for a media pc.

Why 16GB ram?

This looks like a random bundling of moderately expensive parts...

like i said.. he wants to expand it later for gaming purposes but its main use will be media pc..

how big is this things power supply!

this is insane for a media pc

its a corsair 600 watt cant remember the exact model off hand and im not at home to look lol like i said though he wants to expand for gaming uses later but its mainly going to be for media since we all have dedicated monster towers :) which reminds me i really gotta update my sig lol

Still doesn't answer why there's 16GB ram.

The mobo is quite expensive as well.

The cooler will be pretty bad for oc'ing. You might as well go non-K on a non-z87 mobo.

4670 (non-k)

h87 motherboard

4gb of 1600mhz ram (can upgrade if this is an issue later)

the cooler comes with a good tim

maybe more storage depending on your needs

possibly a bluray / dvd drive

a 7870 should be good enough

thats basically what i told him to build except i put an i3 cause even thats a lot for a media centre. and he wont ever get an amd gpu like i said in the op he is an intel/nvidia fanboy. we already have a blu ray installed in the case though cause we have a huge blu ray collection. and i dont care for the tim that the noctua cooler comes with its hard to clean later compared to mx4 and we have like 10 tubes of mx4 laying around since we build alot of pc's for friends and stuff. im hoping i can convince him to do a more minimalist build then what hes planning.. any suggestions on that lol

uhmm both boards are z87.. and i have no idea why he wants 16gb ram.. i think hes planning some light photo video editing in there for when he wants to relax on the couch and cant be at his main workstation/gaming system

Ya an i3 can do fine at games, I'm not sure how long if a graphics card that case can support with the harddrive and psu wires

Not much stock but were planning some light modding in the rear and top, were gonna be building it into a custom cabinet that will have custom venting and stuff, the case is mainly to have a face that fits into the existing theater system the rest wont be seen so were gonna get creative once we decide to pick up the gpu

I'm saying to get a non-z87 mobo. You won't be oc'ing much with that cooler..

ohh my bad, been awake for almost three days but anyway yeah im trying to convince him to step it down because i think its a waste of parts but he seems to be set on pointlessly overbuilding this thing which is why i posted here because i think with your guys agreeing that its stupid to do build it the way hes wanting to he might change his mind. i can kinda understand why hes wanting to do it because he will be using it for some rather odd things that most people dont use a media pc for however its still a waste
