Hey guys!,

I'm new to building PC's and this will be my first build

I asked a friend to help me and he came up with the following:

  • Intel Core i5 6400 (Or i5 6500)
  • Corsair 350d Case
  • kingston HyperX DDR4 16GB
  • Gigabyte GA B150M D3H
  • Corsair CX550m 550W
  • 850 Evo - 250gb
  • Corsair h100i

The only question I have is:

the graphics card which is, either the

  • GTX 1070
  • RX 480.

I have excluded GTX 1060 because i believe that it runs very similar to the RX 480 (but please tell me if i am wrong)

I have a korean monitor which is a CrossOver 27 inch 1440p which runs Single DVI (for no input lag) and the graphics card does need to have a single dvi. On the RX 480 there is no dvi port except the Gigabyte G1 series but i cant find them in NZ.

So my 2 questions are

  1. can someone help me choose a graphics card and just to criticize any thing with the build and help me improve!!
  2. Can using a display port to DVI still have 1440p? or is there some sort of converter that could be used?

Thank you

1070 is pretty great for 1440 from what I've experienced so far.

The corsair H100i - You cant overclock that cpu so I'd either stick with the stock cooler or get a cheaper air cooler (20-40$ range).

Regarding power supply, I'd recommend taking a look at anything around 500w within the tier 1 or 2 range. (Tier list can be found here)

it depends on how much you want to spend. The rx 480 is quite a bit cheaper and is still a solid card but the gtx 1070 is an absolute monster of a graphics card.

Hey man! Really Appreciate your reply!

Is it just me but the water cooler just looks so much cooler than stock or other air coolers? haha

I was opting for water cooling because i will have a side panel window and it will look much nicer imo, do you think it would be okay to get one? Or would it be just over kill.

But i will upgrade the cpu when i have to in the near future!

okay then 1070 it is!

The only problem i have with the RX 480 is how well it runs with 1440p and the lack of DVI port. Is there somewhere around this problem?

duel link. single cable can only get up to slightly above 1080p your going to have to duel link to get 1440p. why not just use hdmi or display port? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

Oh, but what does the active conveter do? I thought you needed an active converter to get to the resolution of 1440p because dual link has a max of 1080?

16gb of ram is overkill unless you have a specific reason for it. Save the $40 and get a i5-6500 or 6600k.

i5-6600k (4.6) | Dark Rock 3 | MSI GAMING X 1060 6GB | 8GB DDR4 | 120GB SSD & 1TB HDD | Crystal 460x

 | Acer GN246HL 1080p 24" 144hz & Acer G246HL 1080p 24" 60hz |

PSU Tier List | PC Partpickers: US Canada Australia UK
