The need for G-Sync?

Xcydus

Hey guys!

I've been looking around the ultrawide monitor market and have opted for a 21:9 ultrawide setup. My goal is to run ultra settings at or above 60 fps on a 1440p resolution and I'm planning to do this on a single 1080 card. From what I've seen in benchmarking results, the 1080 is able to average a healthy 65-90 on even the most intensive AAA titles when maxed.

Looking around, I am definitely considering Acer's x34 mainly because of it's g-sync module. I'm aware that the XR341CK is almost a carbon copy of it only with Freesync instead. Though seeing as I won't really benefit from having g-sync or not as my card won't hit over 100 fps to match the 100hz refresh, I'm starting to wonder if I should just get an LG 34" or something that'll shave off a near $600+.

In a realistic setting, I'll only plan to play these graphic intensive games every so often, and will probably play games like Overwatch and Hearthstone for a large portion of the time. Since Blizzard games are well optimised I would expect that they maintain well above 100 fps. So in saying this, is it worth the G-sync if I also play these light workload games? Will I experience screen tearing when playing virtual card games? And if so, is it something that a little V-sync won't fix without drastically increasing input delays.

Tech netizens,

I'd love to hear from you,

Xcydus

It depends.

If you're content playing 60hz, I'd get the LG and put the money towards a future upgrade. If you'd like to do 120hz, G-Sync will help you when the frame-rate dips below 120.

Personally, I'd go with the G-Sync since it looks like your GPU (and presumably your CPU) are top-tier with nothing above them.

Oh, sorry I meant g-sync + 100hz refresh rate. Australian price tags are a real bitch haha

I'd have to say that I can't play on 60hz after experiencing 75hz+, so I might just go for the G-sync. I's likely a worthy investment for the coming years that I'll be with it.

Thanks :)

Well, do keep in mind that you can always tweak settings to stay over your vsync range so that you don't need G-Sync especially because you have a GTX 1080

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

On a 100hz monitor, you will notice some tearing without g-sync, which i would annoying. On a 144hz monitor, if you maintain 100fps ingame, g-sync is hardly noticable. G-sync is also still quite overpriced, and is definetly not worth paying that much more for.

I wouldnt play on anything less than 120hz, because it would feel laggy compared to 120/144hz. If you buy something like a benQ xl2411Z, you will have no need for g-sync.

To answer your question, on anything less than a 120hz monitor, you need g-sync to not get annoyed by screen tearing. FPS games will still not go as smooth as it does on a 144hz monitor, but i guess it works if you dont care.

On 120/144hz monitors, you have no need for g-sync if you maintain high fps(like 100). Its hardly noticable. Thats my opinion.

G-sync is made for exactly your case. 60 fps on 100 Hz monitor will result in a lot of screen tearing. G-sync will remove that. I went from a 144Hz (original rog swift) monitor to the Acer x34 and I don't regret it at all.  The extra width is great and 100 Hz is fine for me.

Thrive on change. Embrace volatility.
