Hi all. I'm new here on the forum, but I've been watching linus for about 4 + years now. Anyways. My buddy ( not mine) has updated to Unraid Linux version 6  and while doing so, he upgraded his ram. Going from 2Gbs (2x1GB) to 4Gbs (4x1GB). Apparently when after the ram upgrade Linux gets stuck on the at the launch screen. And won't boot further. And when he rooms any 1 of dim so he runs 3Gbs  (3x1gbs) it run perfectly fine. He doesn't believe it's a hardware issue with the ram. Could be possibly the board it's self, but is there anything in Unraid that would prevent a 4th dim or excess amount of ram? I'm not too keen on Linux, so any questions or advice I could pass along would be awesome.

Try to use another OS, or reinstall the linux?

How about motherboard compatibility with 4GB of RAM?

Or your RAM is simply a lemon?

4x1 gbs The two original are 12 years old and tested fine. The two new ones are actually new and tested fine. Unraid runs completely in RAM and boots from a USB drive. So yes, twice he  reformatted and tried both the new version 6 and the old, stable version 5 of the OS.

1. Is that 2 new+1 old or just unplug one of the new ones? If not already explored suggest going through different combinations.

2. There are many boards that have these sort of issues (low density vs high density)

Not much of a hardware guy but the 4th dim might push it past the point of unstable to just flat out bricked.

3. To the best of my knowledge no. In fact many unRAID developers suggest running with 4gbs.

If all the ram is passing legitimate hardware tests I'd start with looking into hardware compatability.

Keep us updated.

Friend tells. Me with one dim (all 4 sticks tested) it boots fine. I am starting to suspect the same thing that it's a motherboard. All the orginal parts are 10 years old. All that is new is the case and the two additonal dims.
