Looking at buying my first DSLR,

looking at the Pentax K-S2 (price in USD) and the Nikon D5500 (price in AUD), leaning towards the K-S2. Will mainly be doing street photography, landscape and maybe a bit of sports.

I am new to photography and any thoughts would be appreciated :D  Thanks, Spesh.

Mainly because of the internal IS and have been told it has better sensor, my only concern is that I won't have access to Nikon's range of lenses, is this important?

it has access to pentax's range of lenses so assuming you can find what you want in their ranges

the K2 is wank for video dunno if that matters to you

Yeah won't be doing any video on it haha xD

I can find the lenses I want to use in the Pentax range but my concern is that when I want to upgrade my camera body in the future I will have to buy Pentax to use my old lenses, wondering if Pentax releases many decent cameras semi-regularly because i heard the K1 was a mess.

I bought a d5500 few months ago. Its very  light( helps when walking around for hours); the touch screen can be useful and the Nikon app which allows you to transfer and take photos.

Ok thanks that could be a consideration as I will be taking it traveling soon.

Its one of the least popular cameras,

you could always get VR lenses for the nikon

Ok, so probably not worth investing in Pentax lenses

only if you want to stay with pentax forever obviously, the same goes for any system, they are all unique to each other

i mean some can be adapter to others (especially if you use mirrorless)

Pentax has a nice range of lenses.

You're new to photography and you're already saying "I heard the K1 was a mess"?

Anytime you buy a new camera body, unless that body supports the same mount as the lens you will definitely need to switch lens systems.  It goes for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, Fuji, etc. when you buy into their ecosystem and later want to change to another.

You're a beginner, for now don't think about "should I invest into this ecosystem" and just think about "OK, I'm going to get a starter camera to learn and practice with".  For this, I find that Nikon and Canon produce very nice starter cameras for beginners to learn.  Well of course Sony, Pentax, Fuji, etc. also makes good cameras but there's just a lot more second hand Nikon and Canon stuff on the market.

Ok well it looks like i am going with the Nikon 5500 anyway, unless anyone can think of a used alternative for the same price.

Look around the local stores or online classifieds where you live.
