Modem to multiple switches

Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

It will technically result in an increase in latency, but it's by an absolutely tiny amount that you can't notice at all.

It can actually work in your favour, as it helps structure the network and reduces the need for wireless devices.

If your question was actually the title, than that would be an issue. If you connected a switch directly to your modem, you would only be able to have a single device connected to the internet unless your connection to your ISP allows you to have multiple public IP addresses. The router is an important device in-between the modem and switch (or combined into the modem/router unit) as it provides NAT services, allowing for multiple devices to be connected to the internet through a single public IP, while having their own local IPs.

Is it a good idea for home networking to connect to multiple switches?  Lets say I Have my Modem/Router connect to a switch for the downstairs hardware and also connect to upstairs switch which connects those hardware devices.  Does this cause extra delays or anything?
