So I wrote a really long post and there was an error in submitting so now I'm doing a tl;dr

1. Budget & Location

australia, ~$2000AUD

2. Aim

gaming at 1080p 144hz on max setting.

3. Monitors

single 27" g-sync monitor.

4. Peripherals

I use a $20 keyboard/mouse that works for me.

5. Why are you upgrading?

too much money in savings. (i kid the sarcasm. losing my long as post has annoyed me greatly).

PARTS LIST:

CPU

  • i5-6600k

CPU Cooler

  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

MOBO (unsure of difference/which to choose, will probably go with the ASUS)

  • Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3
  • Asus Z170-AR
  • ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4

RAM (unsure of difference/which to choose, will probably go with the Corsair)

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 2666MHz
  • Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB DDR4 2400MHz
  • G.SKill Ripjaws V Red 16GB DDR4 2400MHz

STORAGE (I have my OS on an SSD)

  • Seagate 2TB 7200RPM SATA3

GPU

  • ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 Strix Gaming Overclocked 8GB

MONITOR (seems to be the only 27" 1080p 144Hz g-syc monitor available in AUS)

  • Acer XB270H-G 27in 1080p G-Sync 144Hz

CASE

  • Cooler Master Storm Scout 2 EVO Mid Tower ATX Case

POWER SUPPLY

  • Corsair RM850W 80+ Gold Certified Modular PSU

--

I can get the case, psu and cpu cooler second-hand for free, bringing the total cost of system to $2099. So much for that sub $2000 budget.

edit1: curse whoever sets the prices in australia those godless heathens.

depending on your definition of "max" settings.... you may want a stronger GPU. even a GTX 1080 struggles to pin games to 144Hz all day long @ max. but if you don't care about turning a few settings down occasionally, or just playing ultra presets, or don't mind floating in the 100-120 area now and again... then this build should be okay. You may run into CPU bottleneck in SOME extremely CPU bound games, but realistically this is an excellent build and you should enjoy it quite a bit =)

The i5-6600k is more than enough computing power, overclockable to 4.2 ghz and even read somebody had it steady at 4.5. More than enough. Your cpu shouldn't bottleneck I wouldnt think. But an 850w psu I don't think your really gonna need that, a 750 or even 650 should work fine

yeah i guess when i say max i mean anything >= the "very high" preset on most games (on a scale of low/med/high/vhigh/ultra). the main aim is to have 1080p gaming at 144hz so sacrificing a few graphics options here and there is fine by me.
