Audio over DVI?

That's the thing, the monitor hasn't got an DHMI input. ONLY DVI and VGA. So apparently, the monitor has a spare audio jack they forgot to remove during production? Doesn't make much sense to be honest :/

It's input for the built-in speakers. Try it out?

So I have this monitor, it's a Yuraku YV24WBH1, and it has 3 ports on it: VGA, DVI and 3.5mm audio. My question is this: is it possible to have the audio jack output sound? I've seen people argue both yes and no that DVI can carry audio, and I can tell the monitor can output audio because it has a volume option buried in the settings. But I can't get it to work at all, and with no other audio devices plugged in windows tells me I have no sound output devices installed, neither when I use a HDMI to DVI or a straight DVI-DVI going into the monitor. (I know the HDMI can transmit sound, I've done that with an old monitor with HDMI input, but that's not important)

In case my specs are at all relevant, here are any that might be of use:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550

Asus P5Q Pro

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 G1 Gaming 4GB

If you use DVI on the graphics card to HDMI on the monitor, the graphics card's DVI port will be used as an HDMI port instead, and you will get sound. Other than that, there is no way.

I did not know that DVI could support sound! Very interesting

It doesn't really, but graphics card ports support multiple signal types. The DVI port doesn't have to be used for sending DVI signals, it can send other things too, in this case it's sending HDMI signals instead of DVI signals because it detects an HDMI device on the other side.

Yup, this is how all "passive adapters" work. They don't do any kind of conversion, the port already outputs the proper signal from the start, acting as another type of port. Of course the one thing the DVI port can't do is physically morph itself into the shape of an HDMI port, so that's where the adapter comes in, to allow you to actually plug an HDMI cable into the port. But adapters don't do anything with the signal, they just change the shape of the port so you can actually connect the two devices, that's all.

Unfortunately very few people understand how these work, and will just start saying a bunch of nonsense about analog and digital...
