I recently took in my dads broken PC and managed to get to the BIOS, however everything in it is old as the dinosaurs(although not dead) and I am going to replace some of it as well as buy Windows to try to restore its "glory". Respond if you're interested and I can provide more info about it. But for now, know it has an Intel duo of sorts with a broken stock cooler, 1 or 2 GB of RAM, and an old ROG motherboard, as well as a non-modular 500W PSU. Send help.

If you can get some specs on the machine then i might have some suggestions for you :)

-Intel Core 2 duo e6850 3.00 GHz

-Asus Maximus Formula motherboard?

-Antec  80plus 500W EA-500

-2GB Samsung RAM

Overall not entirely sure what the other parts are because they have no labels of any kind but there is:

-a video card/display adapter with VGA

-an ASUS sound card (5.1)

-a Linksys wireless adapter

If you know where I can find other stuff I can look for it

Okay, it's an okay CPU but if you could get an Q6600 or better then already there there would be a massiv change, Even a E8400 can be used to run BF3 on :)

No reason to change the motherboard cause the formula is great with great OC :)

Awesome PSU no change should be needed there :)

If you can get hold on 4GB or more that would be great for the machine (just be aware of the max supported size may be around 8GB total)

If the video card is older than for example the GTX 660 then a card in this area would make it a little fighting machine ;)

If the sound is good through that card then no reason to tamper with it :)

And of cause because the machine is so "old" there is no reason to buy new parts but for around 1650DKr (250USD) here in denmark i can get an Q6600 + 8GB + GTX 660 ti to that machine :)

Xeon mod?

where you mod the board physically and firmware wise along with the CPU to run a cheap LGA 771 quad core Xeon CPU

The Maximus formula is the original one: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_FORMULA/specifications/

Also I want to put a modern-ish graphics card(700 series) in, as well as a newer CPU(4th gen) I don't know how well the motherboard will support anything that new or if it will at all. I've also been having trouble installing Linux, I put the USB drive in and set it as the priority boot device and it won't load it.

I have once tried to have an r9 290 on my old machine with the E8400 and it ran just perfect (okay the cpu had some issues since it was only dual core)

And if you think about the 4th gen pentium/i3/i5/i7 then that is right away a nogo. they are for socket 1150 and the Original Maximus is a socket 775, so any newer cpu's will never fit in the motherboard.

Sound more like there is no boot file on the usb :)
