I just recently upgraded my mobo CPU and RAM, and now I am wondering if it is time to upgrade my cards, I have two gtx 980s, running in SLI. I'm wondering if I should upgrade to two 1080s or wait for the 1080 ti's. What is the price point for the 1080Ti going to be? Is it going to be more expensive? If so how much? When is it supposed to be released?

I'm also trying to figure out what to do about windows 10, as I am worried about software breaking due to automatic updates, and I am thinking of building a windows 7 machine, just to have incase any of my software does not function on windows 10 in the future. The only problem is, do I stick with my old 3960x CPU from 2011, and if not, I would have to basically build a computer from scratch, and get all new parts. I currently have a 3960x from 2011, a asus rampage IV from 2011, 64gb of DDR3 ram, if I went with just that, all I would need is a case and a power supply, and a water cooler closed system. My old 980s could go in it if I had the 1080s. My only problem is that I am worried that my CPU or mobo would die on me soon as they are fairly old from 2011 if I were to build a system with those parts.

Basically, my goal is to have two machines eventually, one for modern gaming etc, and one for a backup system that can play any games or use any software that a current OS cannot. I do not trust windows 10's updates to not break anything, and feel like I will need to have a windows 7 machine on the side.

The other question is, do I need to replace my PSU before it fails? I've had it since 2011, its a silverstone strider 1.5kw PSU. I was planning to buy a new PSU for the system after I got advice on what I should do and put this old one in the windows 7 system and the new one in my windows 10 machine.

CPU: Intel i7 6950x  Motherboard: Asus Rampage V Extreme Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum 64GB 3000MHZ. GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 TI X2 SLI

Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D

Unless you do any VR games or want to play at 4K resolution then you shouldn't need to upgrade to 1080's.

Most software and programs are compatible with Windows 10 now.

I only do 1080p at 144hz, don't have plans for 4k anytime soon, I'm just mainly worried about software not working in the future due to windows 10's automatic updates.

Does anyone know what the price point of the 1080 Tis is going to be, and when they are scheduled to release?

You shouldn't upgrade. Why would you? Your PC is great. And W10's compatibility is pretty good, but you should keep backups of your softwares if you're so worried about this.

And 1080 Ti will probably exist, but no one knows for sure, and if so, it will probably come Q1-Q3 2017. And it will surely be more expensive than the 980 Ti. Obviously between the 1080 and Titan XP price, I would say US$800. But no one has info on that card yet.

No, you don't need to replace your PSU before it fails. It might not ever fail, and if it does, it's not apt to do any damage (being a good Silverstone unit).

It's serious overkill though. Even two 980s only requires about 750 watts, and 1080s would need even less. If you are concerned about it failing, sell it and buy a good 750watt unit, or as you suggested, use it in another computer, or you could try arc welding with it. ;)

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it as I am not always the best judge of when to upgrade, I guess I will hold out on the upgrades for now, until the 1080ti comes out, and then I suppose I will upgrade.

I know I probably should have added this information in the original post but I forgot, here is my entire spec list, I would like to know how long this will last me before I need to upgrade my CPU and mobo again, I'm hoping to get at least 4-5 years out of it.

2x gtx 980's running in SLI

asus rampage V extreme u3.1 lga 2011-v3

Corsair Dominator Platinum Series 64GB DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6950x CPU @ 3.00GHZ

samsung 850 EVO 2tb SSD

360mm CPU water cooler

corsair obsidian 800d case

silverstone strider 1500w psu

I know the CPU was probably a bit overkill for what I am doing, but I always like to be sure I have enough power for whatever I want to do in the future.
