Hello, this is my first post on this forum. I mostly just read what people have to say.

To start most part have been aquired or will be aquire at no cost or little cost. Some part are for future projects.

So my idea or dilemma is I aquired a older pc from my father that he had sitting in his basement that I built him in 2008.

The specs are:

Core 2 duo e8400

Msi p43 neo 7519

4 gb kingston ddr2 667

GeForce 8400 le

No hard drive as I took out his ssd for his new pc

Cooler Master elite 100 case

Apevia 550with power supply.

So I have aquired another 2 gb of memory for a total of 6gb. The case is being scrapped as it has poor airflow and is very dated. I'm looking to upgrade it to a phanteks enthroo pro m acrylic mainly for its simplistic looking front and lots of cooling potentials. I'm also looking to change out the power supply to corsair cs550m gold psu. Both of these purchases are not set in stone but they are for future builds as well.

Hard drive I have a 2tb nas drive I intend to use to start with.

My idea is to move everything to this new case if ordered and build this system. The dilemma I have is the e8400 is only 2 core 2 threads and I will be using this a a duel boot windows 10 and amahi server for a media server and cloud storage. I'm looking to run plex media server on it as well. However now that this hardware is 7+years old you can find some decent core 2 quads for about 30 bucks on ebay. So I'm considering buying a q9650 or maybe a qx9650 all depending on price and availability.

Now to overclockinget... I'm looking to do a fairly modest overclock. See if I can push the memory to 800 mhz or higher. Push the fsb to 1600 if memory can handle and cpu. Again this is old hardware. I'm not aiming for 4.3 ghz maybe just 3.6 or so. It will be cooled by air for the time being until I upgrade my gaming pc next year at which point that hardware will migrate to this case.

I'm looking to have people chime in to get some thoughts on this as to the cpu upgrade it worth the bother not cost and to what degree the quad core will benefit in my application. I'm not familiar with how plex uses hardware or what kind of tweaking I can do to maximize performance from ram and cpu ie. Ratios and fsb clocking on this board. I'm not looking for comments like upgrade to i3, i5, i7. Amd blah blah. This pc has cost me nothing and at most will be 150 bucks for multi use parts.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

I would definitely recommend a q6600 over a core2 but for a plex server you should be fine, but if your willing to look at my post i can give you heavy improvements over anything on the 775/771 platform for right around a 100$ not meant for a home media server but even my cheapest recommendation on that post includes a newer quadcore with hypertheading, its just a list of repurposable workstation and oem computers and cheap cpus that will work with them
