Hello all, I'm painfully new at this and obviously need as much help as possible. I'm building a gaming rig, my first, for serious gaming and VR. I've gone online and done wayy too much research (hints how i found you guys here at linus tech tips) and now i would love some advice from the pro.

Here is a link to my parts list that i plan on getting
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/jVm2m8

The monitor leaves much to be desired but thats something I plan to replace when ive got more than 2k to throw at a new pc. It would be uber appreciated to know if I've done this right and I'm good to order the parts and assemble my first PC and have everything connected and working as ordered. I'm up for any and all criticism you can throw my way. thanks!

1. You have a locked CPU paired with an overclocking (Z-type) motherboard. If you're in to overclocking get the 6700K CPU. If not a H170 motherboard.

2. I would suggest a better quality PSU like the Seasonic M12II Evo 520W

CPU: i7-12700KF Grill Plate Edition // MOBO: Asus Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 // RAM: 16GB G.Skill Trident Z 3200MHz CL14

GPU: MSI GTX 1080 FE // PSU: Corsair RM750i // CASE: Thermaltake Core X71 // BOOT: Samsung Evo 960 500GB

STORAGE: WD PC SN530 512GB + Samsung Evo 860 500GB // COOLING: Full custom loop // DISPLAY: LG 34UC89G-B

for such a rig like this, I'd change a few things:

1.) GTX 1080 + 1080p: I'd rather get 1440p and only 60Hz, looks way better than 1080p 144Hz.

2.) better PSU: this thing can ruin your thing instant.

3.) non k cpu and z170: I'd personally take the 6700k even if I'm not ocing: higher clock speed, marginally higher price

4.) what do yo want with all that fans?

5.) no need for aftermarket thermal paste IMO, the stuff thats coming with the coolers should suffice

Well my initial input on it: Unless you're planning on doing SLI or overclocking something, I'd go for an H170 board. If you are getting SLI, get a 750 W power supply. Speaking of power supply, if you want to get a cheap power supply, I'd get the CX550M over the CX500. It's $10 more, but its quality is quite superior.

It looks like a pretty decent motherboard. If you don't mind having less PCIe slots and a few less headers for other things, microATX boards tend to be a bit cheaper than ATX boards if you're trying to go for as low of a cost as possible.

The green CX/CXMs aren't going to explode your computer after 5 seconds. I've actually used the 430 W model for quite a while without a hassle on a build I made for my brother. That said, the CX450M and CX550M are much better in terms of quality over the CX500. Seasonic is also pretty price-competitive here, too.

yay replies :)

1). i'll look into that. i was thinking the nividia 1080 but i lack knowledge in hertz and.... well everything
2.) yeah i've heard, what do you think of limecats suggestion?
3.) i wasnt sure if going for the K version would be needed
4.) Because FANS! lol no actually its more of an aesthetic thing. the case comes with 1 built in the front, so by adding another front and 2 on top i just think it looks nice. but can be dropped if totally useless
5.) didnt know anything was coming with

is this your build you posted or a suggested build, either way it's totally in my price range

@Caros92 This build suggestion from @19_blackie_73 will do very well. Even gives you the option to add a second GTX 1080 for SLI later which cannot be done with a H170 motherboard. I didn't accounted your budget first but well, if you have 2500 USD to spend I would go for the 6700K.

Yeah, that will work. But with H170 you cannot do SLI, just saying.

You don't need SLI for multiple 4K displays. You can do that with one GTX 1080.

What SLI does is it uses the performance of multiple GPUs instead of one for a game, but the game needs to support it. If you want to play games at 4K 60 FPS at maximum settings, then it may be necessary to have a second GTX 1080. Again, the game has to support it, or else it'll just be one card pulling the weight, and even if it does support SLI, it might not scale very well.

Ah ok, i think ive seen some stuff about this. Im not too concerned since its a toss up if what i play even supports it, but the expandability is nice none the less. I may go for this suggested build, havent heard you guys say anything had about it (yet 0.0) and its totally right in my price range. Big thanks to you all, especially @19_blackie_73 for the suggested build

Well with your budget I could suggest going with an X99 build. It'll fit your budget but it would be a bit overkill unless you plan on streaming/video editing and such.

Im gonna have to look into this and compare it to the other build. Both are great anf i love potantial. As well as hardcore gaming i edit videos so the bonus cores could help. Im gonna need to figure out which setuo is best or mix the 2
