Is running a NAS on my pc in paralell with Windows a bad idea? Is it going to be a significant performance hit? I have an i5 6600k and 16gb of ram, the NAS wouldnt be accesed Super often, but there would be quiet a few times when im gaming and the NAS is being accesed at the same time. I dont plan on using a RAID config any time soon, just a 3TB HDD and maybe an SSD write cache later on

It might slow down your game by abit, but it would hardly affect your performance unless you have a high speed network between the nas and the client and you're transferring very large files

Desktop: i7-6700K / Asus Z170 S / H100i V2 / LPX 2400Mhz 16GB / 960 EVO 250GB / 2x 860 EVO 500GB / RM750i  / NZXT H440 XB271H + Z22n Monitors

Laptop: Thinkpad T450s / i7-5600U / 12GB / 860 EVO 500GB

The CPU shouldn't be what is taxed with this. the 6600K is more than powerful enough. Depending on your drive config, (SSD Cache - HDD Backend like you're suggesting), you'll hit Network limitations long before the CPU is taxed. Is this "NAS" going to be a VM running a separate OS, or a simple file share setup on your desktop? If it is a VM, your CPU and RAM will taxed more, but should still be a relatively minimal load.

Generally speaking, the advantages of a NAS is to take your storage off of your daily use computers so in the event they fail, your data is still available. Additionally, a NAS SHOULD provide some form of redundancy for drive failure.

While budget may be a deciding factor here, I'd recommend a dedicated machine for your storage. If you must run it on your existing machine, then it would help to know more about how you're intending on deploying it.

What NAS OS are you planning on using? What hyper-visor are you intending on using? Are you wanting to pass your entire 3TB disk over to the NAS for storage? Do you want the network traffic to be shared with your windows installation, or go over a separate, dedicated link?
