So my laptop has an old hard drive, and its becoming tedious to use in between classes, especially when i use it to get lab work done, so I just assume I can throw the files i want to save to a usb, take out the HD and put an SSD in just like a computer, new windows install and everything? OR are there compatibility issues? do I have to format it?, any ssd recommendations to avoid?

As long as it fits the same size, you're pretty much good I think.

It will work like with normal PC.

You just need to check how thick can SSD be to fit inside your laptop.

And you will have to format it when installing new windows. But before you do that, just copy all the data that you need on USB or something. There are also some devices that let you connect your HDD via USB to computer.

Intel i7 12700K | Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 | Pure Loop 240mm | G.Skill 3200MHz 32GB CL14 | CM V850 G2 | RTX 3070 Phoenix | Lian Li O11 Air mini

Samsung EVO 960 M.2 250GB | Samsung EVO 860 PRO 512GB | 4x Be Quiet! Silent Wings 140mm fans

WD My Cloud 4TB

EDIT: I got it, I hope, I switched from uefi to legacy and that allowed it to boot. But if i switch back to uefi will it still boot, or does it even matter if i boot from legacy vs. uefi

Okay, so the ssd is in it, and has a valid copy of windows 10 on it, but doesnt boot. I also tried using my windows 7 usb and that doesnt show up either even though when i go into the bios, theyre both recognized
