Good Mic For Reducing Background Noise

daedricstoy25

I have been browsing around for a mic that's good at filtering out background noise. I have a few that I've had in mind but wanted to get some other suggestions. The mic on my Astro A50's is just way too sensitive, it picks up every keystroke, mouse click, breath, and the small and quiet AC unit a few feet away that doesn't even actually blow towards me, as well as people across the room, or little sniffles that i can't even hear myself make when there's no sound coming through the headset.

More specifically, the solutions I've had in mind are either the Uni-Directional Version of the ModMic or an Audio Technica AT2005USB.

Something like a dynamic mic that has a super cardioid pick up pattern ideally

That's exactly what the Audio Technica mic is, just wondering if there's better options at that price range, or if it'd even make that huge of a difference.

It says in the description that it's a dynamic, literally the first bullet point on Amazon.

Apologies, I thought you originally posted about the 2020

Yes that would be a good option, the shure sm58/57 is a good option around that price too

Dont forget to get a shock mount and arm for best results :)

Also the uni directional mod mic, its okay for skyping etc but its not really recording quality though it can sound ok as it does in my review that I did

No big deal man. I appreciate the help, wanted to make sure I was looking in the right direction. And of course I'm getting an arm. What would you recommend for a good shout mount? I'm honestly not shure if I would need one seeing as I'm just using it for chatting over skype/discord/etc. What would be the benefit to having a shock mount?

Also I don't think the shure mics would be a good option for me, I'm only looking at mics that connect via USB or 3.55mm if I had decided on the ModMic. I could get an XLR to USB adapter with the shure mics but it costs an extra S100.

SNIP

I use a rode PSA1 but there are some budget options from companies on amazon that will be ok, those mics arent too heavy so will be ok on budget ones from like neewer etc

Shock mounts isolate the mic from the surround area, so imagine your mic is on a mic arm mounted to your desk, you tap your foot on the floor, the vibration goes through your desk, up the mic arm and vibrates the mic housing causing a sound - a shock mount suspends the mic on rubber straps that dampen this, and effectively isolate the mic from bumps knocks and taps etc

You can get XLR to USB cables for the Shure :)

Dont forget a dynamic needs to be like 1-2" from your mouth so if you cant be bothered with that, get a mod mic - though its not 100% isolating

I'd rather have to be stupid close to my mic than being kick from groups or muted because people can hear the sound of me blinking.

When using the dynamic mic should I have it point directly towards me?

Yes, think of it as ling a singers microphone, pointing straight at you, pref less than 6" from your mouth,

Most of these mics have a "proximity" effect and you will get bassier as you move closer - giving you a nice radio sounding voice :) i think 2-4" is a good distance,

Think of the top of the mic as having a cone that it picks you up from, if you move your head to the side you need to rotate so you are still speaking into the mic

So I was looking at this for a good budget combo. Although it looks like it forces the mic to point downwards, or is that adjustable?

I believe you can pivot it to any angle
