3.5Ghz vs 4Ghz

Iv been wondering what difference there is between 3.5 and a 4Ghz skylake processor.

Maybe someone knows a good video comparing them?

Comparing the clock speed is not enough to differentiate 2 CPUs

 

If you have the same two CPUs (eg two i7 6700k) then the 4ghz model would be 10% faster

 

But if you are comparing like a 4ghz Pentium to a 3.5ghz i7 its not as clear cut

Slightly higher FPS ingame, especially if you have a multi gpu config.

Marginally better performance in windows, but rendering will be faster.

 

Anything CPU intensive has an improvement? How much? Up to 14%?

Assuming everything else about the processors are the same, then its simple math. 4.0 divided by 3.5.... its going to be about 14.3% faster.

Depends on the kind of speed you're looking for. Like i said, assuming everything else is the same about the processors, then a 4.0 GHz CPU is going to be almost exactly 14.3% faster than a 3.5GHz CPU. That being said, if you're gaming that often won't relate to exactly 14.3% more performance (or more accurately, your 7.15% fps increase). Often times it may not result in any fps gain at all in a lot of games. conversely, if you look at rendering or some other application that scales perfectly from all CPU power, then you will get almost exactly your 7.15% increase (rather, 7.15% reduced rendering time)

If programs and games all scaled very well with frequency you'd get a nice benefit but the reality is they don't. In the case of games you're usually GPU limited.

The extra speed will give you a small gain, the biggest gains will be more cores or efficiency e.g. a 4 Ghz Skylake i7 will run circles around a 4 Ghz Lynnfield.

 

When I say more cores, I mean more cores from the same processor family/generation. An 8 core AMD is probably slower than a 4 core 6700k.
