I have a relatively small youtube channel that focuses around minecraft and one of the greatest ways to unite a small community like that is through hosting a server. I've previously done this before but through a server host which really puts a dent in my paypal balance. I am curious what the price would be to just build a server to host a minecraft server of about 20-30 people max. My internet speeds are usually a consistent 40 down and 4 up. I already have a case and power supply waiting around. I would need CPU, MOBO, RAM, and either an HDD or SSD. I'm not quite sure what to do on that front. This would be a budget PC build so whatever I need at the minimum to host this would be great. This PC would only be used for minecraft servers and maybe as a NAS. Thanks in advance.

At least an i5 or i7 since the server uses 4 cores. An i7 would give you extra threads to run stuff like file server and other programs without using the server cores dedicated to the MC server.

16GB of ram is enough.

idk if graphics are important for servers, but try and run an 950, cheap and effective.

I don't think you need a gpu to run a server. Get a nice cpu with some decent ram and you should be fine. I recommend getting a small ssd for the server too. If you're going to do a Nas server then get a nice hdd. But I would recommend getting both, a 250gig ssd is more than enough.

Use Freenas as the OS if you want to have a NAS and a Minecraft server. There is a plugin called MineOS that you can use.

Freenas recommends using ECC memory.

Desktop: i5 4670k, Z97-K, 16GB, MSI GTX 770, Evga 850G2, TT T31

Freenas Server: i3 4170, X10-SLL-F-O, Crucial 16GB UDIMM, 4x4TB WD Red, Evga 550GS, Fractal 804

Peripheral: K60, HyperX Cloud

Mobile: Nexus 6P
