980Ti Sli performance issue

Hello Community!

 

I recently bought some new parts for my computer. I bought a new motherboard and a 2nd 980ti that I was gunna use to sli. After rebuilding the computer I installed nvidia drivers and enabled sli via the control panel as well as turn on max performance. The issue I'm having is the both cards are giving worse performance than just 1. On GTA V I can get 60fps on 1 card. With 2 I'm getting around 35. My specs are. MSI Z170A G45 / I7 6700K / DDR4 16gb @ 2666 /  Aerocool 1000GM / Zotac 980ti Amp edition + Gigabyte Windforce 980ti.

 

The board is sli capable and so is the PSU. There is no bottleneck either.

 

I've tried

-reinstalling windows.

-reinstalling the nvidia drivers using DDU

-changing sli bridge adapter.

-switching cards around.

-control panel + power settings to high performance.

- tried using nvidia inspector and applying profiles.

 

I'm really not sure what's going on. All help is appreciated!

My guess would be that since the cards aren't the same they're conflicting. It shouldn't be happening but I would test the newer card to see if it's performing well.

 

Also, did you separate the cards by a slot?

Thanks for your answer. What do you mean sepersting by a slot. There is a PCI x16 and a x8 next to each other.  There both running at x8 and I think if they were separated anymore. The bridge won't reach. I've tested both cards in single and have achieved the high performance.

Is one of them thermal throttling? I would also try uninstalling the Nvidia drivers (or using the beta beforehand) and letting the 980 Ti's base drivers take over.

How would I know if they were thermal throttling? 

 

+ looking for the manual drivers, I didn't see any beta drivers. Win 8.1 64bit 980ti.

Use Geforce Experience for the beta build.

Use MSI Afterburner for the temps.

Alright what am I enabling on the odd for the results needed. I'll put them on and run them for 5 minutes on gtav and post a screenshot here Osd for MSI afterburner*

Just use the performance charts they provide. Look at the GPU temps, usage, and clocks. If you see them dip due to heat separating them would be a good idea.

Okay I see what you're talking about. I didn't mention but the poor performance is all the time. My PC is cool, I launch a game quick. Fps is low. So I'm not sure how it could be thermal throttling ?

Interesting. Do the cards have the same clock speed and memory speed?

My 1st card is a zotac 970ti amp edition and my 2nd card is a gigabyte windforce 980ti. I believe they have different clock speeds however researching before I bought. This was not an issue.

Why is it showing Gigabyte as both cards?

If you check MSI it should show both of the cards and their speeds. I would try to uninstall the drivers.

Something is wrong with GPU #1. The clocks and memory should be the same as that's the design. Can you go into Device Manager and check for what display drivers you have?

Where am I looking for the display driver mate?

Right click the Start Menu. Device Manager. Display drivers. Does it show two drivers?

It shows both nvidia cards under display adapters yes.

Your screens are going to go dark. Can you uninstall them?

I can uninstall them yes, however I've reinstalled drivers multiple times and I'm not seeing any beta drivers after enabling the beta features via geforce experience.

What might be happening is the cards are being updated as if they're the same 980Ti. I've provided the (hopefully) AIB drivers.

 

Check your gaming performance before downloading the AIB drivers and afterwards.

I think they are the wrong drivers pal. My zotac is the amp edition, not the extreme amp. And what do you mean the cards might be updating? Thanks again.

Sometimes Windows installs the same driver twice.

 

I had a similar issue with the 780 Ti in SLI when I had the Reference and EVGA.

This is literally embarrassing. I can get full 60fps on 1 single 980ti and on sli I'm getting literally 40fps loss.
