144hz flickering

Just got my first 144hz monitor, when I choose 144hz my screen goes flickering and goes black for 1 second and then comes back. Anyone know anything about this or how I can fix it? It works fine on 60hz. My graphic card is GTX 970 Gaming and my cpu is i7 4790k

Are the drivers updated? I think there were issues with 144hz monitors in the past on nvidia cards... Afaik it's solved in newer drivers.
