We let it charge on it's factory charger overnight (just like we have every night for about a year), and there was a loud pop, and a lot of smoke.  Luckily, we had an otterbox case on it to contain the explosion.

So.... what caused this?

I've worked it down to one or a combination of three theories:

  1. The otterbox insulated and built up heat, this seems unlikely as we have been doing this since we've owned the phone
  2. Overcharging, the circuitry to prevent this failed somehow
  3. Battery fault

I really don't know how to approach this, which phone to get now, if I should chase after compensation for a new phone, is this my fault, the factory's fault, etc.

My guess is either 2 or 3 happened. Overcharging prevention failed or battery went suicidal...

Is the phone still under warranty? If so, I would contact the shop where you bought it.

Heat is the likely cause of this issue. It's a common issue for folks that sleep with a charging phone under their pillows.

Potentially, but keep in mind the only insulator was the phone case, it was left on a nightstand to charge.  The case has a clear outline where the battery melted the side of the otterbox case.

That said, what are the chances of me opening this and finding some way to recover some of the video and pictures?  Don't bother lecturing me on backups, I know already.
