Windows 10 Fresh Install help

Hey LTT, just got a query about starting from scratch. I bought a windows 8 laptop, and last couple times (when I've been on 8.1)  I've had to run all the windows 8 security updates, then upgrade to windows 8.1, then run all the windows 8.1 updates and all was good.

However, now that the free upgrade to Windows 10 has expired, I'm not sure whether it'll reset to windows 8 (where I'll basically be stuck there) or whether it'll reset to windows 10. I need windows 10 on this computer, I am a heavy multi-workspace user and I use the quad-snapping feature a lot.

If it's on the same machine, it'll still have the Win 10 key.

I just did a 10 reinstall on my laptop a few days ago, and it worked fine.

As long as no hardware, specifically the motherboard hasnt changed, then your win 8 key will automatically register your windows up when you fresh install. You shouldnt need to enter the key into the program as you install. Once you boot into windows, the "entitlement" as they call it will automatically recognize the motherboard information and register you back up.

What happens when you have a non-OEM windows 10 key (upgraded from windows 8.1) and decide to change motherboard/cpu?

Then your screwed and will have to buy a new win 10 license as your old one will no longer work since its new hardware.

So when I factory reset the computer, It'll boot up to windows 8, and then still let me upgrade to windows 10 based on the fact that my motherboard hasn't changed?

no, what you should go do is download the media creation tool from Microsoft and create a bootable USB drive with Windows 10 and just fresh install straight to windows 10. Bypass 8 all together.
