Just a quick topic on a possible upgrade from a 390x. I'm looking to game on 144hz 1440p within the next year or so. (not getting the monitor till I get the card.)

So my thoughts are to get a 1080 in a couple months. Would a 1080 be a decent upgrade from a 390x? Would pair with a gsync 1440 144hz monitor.

If a 1080 is a good choice, anyone got manufacturers recommendations? I'm thinking EVGA or MSI maybe? Would want it quiet and cool, but pretty good clocks. "Max uber power" not an absolute requirement. I've seen comments on power, but would like opinions on what the best air cooler is.

Current Specs:

Gaming Rig: i7 6700k | ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming | XFX DD 390X | 16gb DDR4 3000mhz | 500gb SSD | 27" 1080p 60hz

Netflix/Couch Rig: i3 6320 | ASUS Z170I Pro Gaming | 8gb DDR4 2400mhz | 250gb SSD | 36" FHD TV

Firstly, I'd say wait till October and see what Vega brings to the table. Maybe you get more value for your money as a 390X is still capable at 1440p.

Secondly, avoid MSI for Pascal. Nearly every single 1070 they've soled has been RMAed.

That or if OP is impatient an EVGA GTX 1070 would be good. Actually that'd be my recommendation. Because AMD hasn't officially said anything about Vega and when we will actually see it so the road map from the Capsaicin event back in March is all we really have to go by. Though yeah, a 390X would be plenty for 1440p until OP could get a 1070 or Vega GPU.

There was a Vega event for AIBs recently IIRC

Oh wow if vega is going to be clarified that soon then I might wait for news on that. I thought it was 2017 at the earliest.

Only issue is I would actually be getting the card as a gift for something, and it would really be in the next couple months ( he wants me to make my mind up before xmas at latest). I have been told a 1080 is a possibility so that's why I went for that above a 1070. Good to know to avoid MSI. I've heard good things about EVGA, I believe the ACX 3.0 Cooler? Other than that I was looking and there are some odd ones kicking about such as Zotac who I haven't heard from since ye old days before my 660ti. ASUS have a mixed rep too I believe.

Reason I was leaning towards graphics cards as a gift is the person I get it as a gift from uses a website I can't remember of the top of my head, and they generally just ask me to relay a model number and a couple of manufacturers to choose from as I don't know the selection on that site.

I also need a monitor but since there are so many specs (tn/ips/hz/1440/4k etc) I'll get that myself so I know what I am getting into. I was going to get it now as my 390x could probably manage 1440p in some manner as you say, but then there is the freesync/gsync thing, if I got a gsync now would it be worth it with a 390x, and then if vega comes out and turns out to be awesome I've got a feature I can't use. Likewise if I get a freesync monitor and vega disappoints or is late.
