General upgrade help

Deus Lucis

A friend of mine convinced me a while back to build a computer over purchasing a prebuilt one as I could get more bang for my buck that way, with his help I built a desktop containing the following components:

GPU: GeForce GTX 660
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz
RAM: 2x Team Elite Plus 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97-HD3 (rev. 2.0) LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
PowerSupply: CORSAIR CX-M series CX600M 600W 80 PLUS BRONZE Active PFC ATX12V & EPS12V Modular Power Supply

all inside of which are inside my: Corsair Graphite Series 230T CC-9011042-Ww Black on Black case

I'm looking to upgrade to a higher performance graphics card but have no idea where to start. Also if anyone has any other suggestions on other upgrades I could do to boost performance that would also be highly appreciated.

And as a side note I would like to learn more about computers and would like to know what helpful sites/books/videos people have watched that helped them better understand this awesome technology.

What's your HDD?

Call the ball with how much you can spend on the GPU. We can level your wings from that point on.

You have not listed any storage devices, but I'm assuming you do not currently own an SSD for your boot and that's usually the first thing to buy when you're looking to upgrade your rig.

As far as graphics go atm RX 480 is supposed to be the best value option but all depends on your budget in this field.

Welcome to the PC master race!

A good starting point for high end GPU would be either GTX 1060 (Nvidia) or RX 480 (AMD).  Both around $250 USD roughly.

Next on your list should be a solid state drive (ssd), if you don't already have one.

There are a ton really great videos on computer builds from Linus Tech Tips, as well as many other high quality tech channels.  If you prefer reading, check out tomshardware.com for some really great info on all things computer related!

for storage I currently have a 240gb Kingston ssd and a 1tb seagate HDD

price range I'm aiming at under $200 but if thAt isn't possible then somewhere around $250 would still be achievable for me.

Best bang for the buck is likely going to be the RX 480 4GB, should be about $200.  But wait for the board partners to release their custom cooled versions (reference design has a really crappy cooler).  Not sure when they'll be available though - should be soon.
